Fine- tune your research skills interning with a dynamic research unit to help advance the mission of AARP on issues that affect persons who are 50+.
We are seeking a Master’s-level graduate student who is pursuing a degree in research, marketing, business, or a related field. You must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively; have an interest in learning about issues that are affecting individuals who are age 50 and older; and must possess excellent research, organizational, and communications (written and oral) skills. The Research Department of AARP is looking for a strong Master’s-level graduate student to serve as a paid intern in summer, 2018. The intern will support the Consumer Insights team for Membership, Brand, and Organization as they conduct research to support the organization’s efforts on behalf of midlife and older adults and provide data, research findings, and integrated insights on the motivations, needs, interests and behaviors of members and potential members. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with the largest social welfare organization in the country and is an excellent way for a talented graduate student interested in research and marketing to acquire hands-on experience as part of a small, committed and professional team. The position will directly affect the ability of the Research Center to support AARP’s social mission.
An intern coordinator will be responsible for providing guidance and workflow management to the intern and he or she will also have access to a mentor and to the Director of Membership, Brand, and Organization.
The Intern will work on a variety of research projects. Tasks include:
- fact checking reports,
- writing backgrounds for reports,
- data mining public datasets and internal data sets using SPSS
- preparing graphics for presentations,
- conducting and summarizing basic data analyses,
- create Infographics and an array of other research-related tasks.
- AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
- Our ideal intern is working towards a Master’s degree in research, marketing, business, or a related field. Applicants for this position must be enthusiastic and have excellent research, writing, and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team. Advanced computer skills, including facility with Microsoft Office (Work, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and familiarity with SPSS, are required. Applicants must have excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills and an ability to identify, analyze and resolve issues creatively and independently. Excellent oral and written communication skills and keen attention to details are also required.
- The successful candidate will possess excellent writing and communication skills and be inquisitive, organized, detail-oriented, friendly, able to multi-task, knowledgeable of research practices, and be comfortable with both standard Microsoft Office software (particularly Excel and Word) and SPSS. Applicants must have excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills and an ability to identify, analyze and resolve issues creatively and independently. Applicants must be actively attending an accredited university. Students pursuing their MA, MS, or PhD degrees in social sciences, communications, policy, or business are encouraged to apply.
