Regional Director of Sports

The Regional Director of Sports will help set the direction for all sports programming within the association and will provide direct supervision of the Sports Managers and Coordinators at each branch.  Attention to detail, superior communication skills and the ability to work closely with branch staff to ensure exceptional satisfaction and value to YMCA members and program participants is essential.  The Regional Director of Sports is a key position within our association and the ability to identify and develop strategic partnerships is critical for long-term success. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Responsible for direct oversight, implementation and expansion of sports programs at all branches.
  • Create the annual budget for sports programming at each branch and work with branch staff to forecast on an ongoing/monthly basis to ensure that budget goals are achieved.
  • Direct supervision of the Regional Sports Development Manager and Sports Managers and Coordinators at the branch level. 
  • Ensures that all sports staff and volunteers are properly selected, trained and supervised by branch staff at each location.  
  • Work with branch leadership to identify areas/needs/opportunities for the expansion and development of sports programming at the local level.    
  • Work with Metro Operations and branch leadership to identify and establish community partnerships for the purpose of expanding and improving association wide sports programming. 
  • Develop and implement sports standards that focus on program safety, consistency and quality.
  • Develop and implement high quality training for coaches and volunteers for each sport offered within the association.
  • Work with the VP of Membership and Marketing to aggressively market sports programs internally and externally creating program growth and expansion.
  • Operate programming that meets the goals of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit.
  • Work with Mission Resources Department to deliver programming and provide data as required in any grant funded sports activity.  
  • Model relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. 
  • Support individual branch program goals identified by the annual member and customer survey.
  • Be accountable to association program goals identified by the annual member and customer survey.
  • Meet all Association standards and guidelines.
  • Assist branches with sports related sponsorships and participates in Annual Campaign events where appropriate.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Sports or related field required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 5-7 years of proven results with developing, building and expanding a wide variety of high quality sports programs with the YMCA or similar organization.  Examples of your achievements with increasing participation numbers and/or improving financial results should be included in your resume or cover letter. 
  • Candidates must be able to demonstrate proven results with leading, supervising and developing a team of staff and volunteers. 
  • Previous experience and proven results with developing and managing a department budget is also required.
  • Previous YMCA experience at a director level is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of all sports programs from a local, regional and national perspective.
  • Experience in administration, curriculum development and implementation, program planning and knowledge of sports safety guidelines. 
  • Must possess a commitment to the YMCA’s mission and purpose, and knowledge of how it is accomplished through high quality programming.    
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $47,000.00 - $57,000.00
