Context: Works with National and Chapter staff and volunteers on local community programs and to recruit residents for local outreach, educational, and advocacy activities.

Scope: The Community Program Coordinator assists in education efforts of area residents regarding community environmental risks and solutions. Works closely with the appropriate chapter staff and Sierra Club leaders to mobilize members of the local community, recruit environmental supporters to participate in community outreach, education, and advocacy teams, and train community residents to become community outreach, education, and advocacy team leaders.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Plans and implements outreach strategies and tactics to recruit environmental supporters to participate in community outreach, education, and advocacy about environmental community risks and solutions
  • Educates community team members about environmental community risks and solutions.
  • Mobilizes community members to become involved in outreach, education and advocacy in the local community regarding environmental community risks and solutions.
  • Assists the appropriate staff and volunteer leaders with planning and implementation of assigned programs, including coordinating phone banks, overseeing volunteer door-to-door outreach, handling lists and databases of campaign activists and supporters, and making arrangements for events and activities.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with at least one community organizing or mobilizing project.
  • Able to travel as needed.  Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
  • Ability to interact positively with community residents, volunteers, staff and the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in the environment or related public interest issues.
  • Ability to clearly explain complex issues and effectively communicate them to community residents.
  • Proficient with Word processing and Spreadsheet applications. 
  • Proficient with Google Docs Suite and social media platforms.
