The Director of People and Finance is a senior member of the Maryland/DC chapter, a business unit of The Nature Conservancy. S/he has primary responsibility for providing leadership for all operations functions and diversifying, engaging, and empowering staff and volunteers. This includes activities related to Fiscal Management and Sustainability, Human Resources and Recruiting, Diversity Initiatives, Administration, Facilities, Technology and Information Systems, Office Management and Safety.
The Director of People and Finance works in close cooperation with the Executive Director and as part of the Maryland/DC Chapter’s Leadership Team to support the Chapter’s conservation outcomes through sound administration and a strong organizational culture. S/he will lead and champion the chapter’s efforts to become more inclusive, diverse and equitable. S/he provides leadership and management of the Chapter’s recruiting, onboarding, and retention. S/he will be responsible and accountable for oversight of all financial functions of the Chapter. Financial responsibilities include working with the Finance Manager on development and management of annual budgets, preparation of financial reports for Board of Trustees meetings, and development and implementation of short and long term financial sustainability goals. S/he oversees capital accounting processes, including land transactions and debt. S/he works closely with the Philanthropy team in proposal preparation and Chapter sustainability goals. The Director of People and Finance must have/acquire advanced knowledge of the Conservancy’s systems and resources and apply that knowledge in managing operations staff and coordinating with staff state- and Conservancy-wide. S/he works in close cooperation with any or all of the following: Conservancy staff, donors, trustees, vendors, public agencies, financial institutions and legal and accounting professionals.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Ensure programmatic commitments, Conservancy policies and procedures, GAAP, and financial standards are met and managed for compliance. Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally;
- Oversight and development of budget, forecast, sustainability, and strategic financial plans;
- Oversight of general accounting duties, to include: basic journal entries for transfers, loans, land transactions, accruals, deferred revenue and expense corrections;
- Review and monitor income statement and balance sheet (including pledges) items at month and year-end close;
- Provide financial expertise on land deals or other special projects;
- Ensure revenue, expenses and net assets are managed to reflect donor intent including working with cross-functional teams to perform revenue allocation;
- Collaborate with Grants Specialists, Project Managers and Finance Manager on managing public and private funded awards;
- Oversight of administrative processes in the Bethesda Office and Maryland/DC satellite offices (management of central administrative functions, facilities, telecommunications, telephone/public reception, office supplies and equipment maintenance, and purchasing);
- Manages documentation, initiates complex processes, and serves as key team member for the enhancement of systems and tools;
- Maintain confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally-charged information;
- Supervise one or more administrative or professional staff, including training and professional development;
- Travel on short notice, working long or flexible hours as needed;
- Responsible for capacity planning, recruiting and onboarding of new staff, performance management, administration of the annual performance evaluation and merit processes, salary analysis, coaching, work-life balance, administrative tasks, time and effort reporting, and providing support to staff on employee relations and professional growth opportunities;
- Leadership to nurture a workplace climate of connectedness, innovation, diversity, and inclusion that empowers staff;
- Leadership to ensure a productive, engaged and innovative workplace of leaders, by providing staff with opportunities, enrichment activities, and the technology/tools needed to be effective and motivated resulting in enhanced staff capacity, confidence, and motivation;
- Develop and implement best-in-class people strategies and initiatives to achieve our mission;
- Collaborate with Executive Team to develop and implement strategies to increase board of trustee diversity;
- Design and plan new initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide goals and strategies are achieved;
- Ensuring organizational structure and talent of the Chapter is optimized, and recruiting/onboarding, retention and talent development are aligned to continually advance a diverse and inclusive workforce.
- In consultation with the TNC’s office of Diversity & Inclusion, develop and implement strategies to meet diversity outreach and recruitment goals;
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 6 years related experience or equivalent combination, including 2 years managing operations functions;
- Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of fiscal management, human resource functions, and office facilities;
- Finance / Accounting experience; developing and administering departmental budget or equivalent, generating financial reports, and analyzing and interpreting data;
- Experience in developing, directing and managing multiple plans, projects, and complex processes and implementing strategic program goals;
- Experience handling confidential information;
- Experience negotiating agreements;
- Superior organization, planning and problem-solving skills;
- Experience working with cross-functional teams across multiple organizational levels; and
- Supervisory experience, including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance, including conflict resolution;

- Proficiency in interpreting guidelines and manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting data;
- Successful experience managing and implementing strategic program goals;
- Experience developing, implementing and maintaining the adoption of strategic workforce planning;
- Superior planning and problem-solving skills;
- Accounting degree and CPA accreditation; and/or
- Non-profit GAAP accounting experience
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record (per TNC’s Auto Safety Program)
