NRDC is seeking a Senior Attorney/Renewable Energy Advocate to join the Midwest Region team of the Climate & Clean Energy Program, to be based in NRDC’s Chicago office.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provide written and oral advocacy with a focus on NRDC’s renewable energy and climate priorities in the Midwest before utility regulatory commissions, state legislatures, state agencies, and the executive branch;
- Serve in a leadership role in developing and nurturing strong relationships with state-level decision makers, elected officials, coalition allies, and local partners, to advance and defend strategic clean energy and climate priorities, policies and laws, on state, regional and local levels;
- Conduct policy research and analysis to develop and support positions;
- Coordinate and represent NRDC in coalitions on renewable energy and climate issue-areas;
- Provide strong expertise and experience to inform strategy, campaign activities, and stakeholder engagement;
- Represent NRDC’s regional and state clean energy vision in the media through press interviews, op-ed pieces, and blog postings;
- Develop advocacy materials to amplify NRDC’s message in coordination with NRDC’s Communications department;
- Work with the Climate & Clean Energy Program’s Midwest Region Director and other members of the team, as appropriate, to set priorities, budgets and timelines and effectively deploy consultants and partners to meet project timelines and objectives. As appropriate, manage state and regional budgets;
- Coordinate with NRDC colleagues to strengthen effective relationships with key federal officials as needed;
- Be a central part of a strong and collegial team that is both focused on meeting project expectations and using the full range of expertise at NRDC and among its partners to effect change at the regional, state and federal levels.
Educational Background:
Juris Doctor or Master’s Degree in relevant field required;
Skills/Experience:
- 7-10 years’ experience in renewable energy and climate policy, and/or relevant governmental, regulatory or legislative experience;
- A sense of mission and passion for protecting the environment and advancing NRDC’s policy priorities;
- Ability to represent NRDC with maturity, judgment and professionalism;
- Track record of cultivating high-level relationships with non-profit, political and philanthropic leaders;
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills;
- Significant project management experience;
- Willingness to travel to states within the Midwest region, as well as to other NRDC offices and U.S. locations as needed.
