The IT Broadcast Production Systems Analyst is part of the IT Applications group and contributes to the operations of the computer systems at NPR.  The NPR IT team is highly interactive and hands-on with the daily news production staff.  A primary role for this position will be the support, administration, configuration and maintenance of NPR’s On Air Production tools.  NPR uses a news content management system developed in-house called NewsFlex and the associated DAVID Systems production tools for content production.  These tools are used for newswires, script editing, audio ingestion, and the editing and playback of content to support the editorial processes. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Participates in software, Quality Assurance, deployment and administration
  • Provides creative troubleshooting and support for the related production systems, services and users
  • Routinely installs, monitors and, and maintains server infrastructure, end user computer systems, applications, database systems and telecommunications equipment.
  • Trains, documents and applies IS project management techniques for users and IT colleagues
  • Responds quickly to critical, equipment and software issues. Includes on call assignments to support NPR’s 24 x 7 x 365 schedule.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree with a concentration or major in engineering or computer science
Skills/Experience: 
  • or a Bachelor’s degree and 3 years direct career experience in information technology disciplines
  • Certification as a Microsoft SQL Administrator or equivalent database desired.
  • Previous radio or television production support environment or equivalent experience would be a strong asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Stellar professional work ethic with the ability to meet commitments and deadlines and take ownership of problems.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially as it pertains to process execution, testing, following policy and procedures, change management, maintaining an orderly technology environment, labeling, and documenting
  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks based on commitments.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Windows and Linux Server Virtualization and System Administration
  • Skilled in Linux Shell (bash preferred) and Windows powershell scripting; experience with Python, Perl, Javascript a strong plus.
  • Experience with administering Apache and/or NGINX
  • Experience with AWS (preferred) or other cloud services.
  • Experience with continuous integration and deployment tools like Bamboo or similar experience strongly desired.
  • Experience working with version control systems also a also desired
