Associate Vice President of Philanthropy

Under the guidance of the President/CEO, the Associate VP of Philanthropy will provide strategic oversight to the Annual Campaign and annual giving programs, donor relations and stewardship program and special campaign initiatives with the goal of inspiring new levels of engagements, commitment, and philanthropic support to advance the mission of the YMCA.  Responsible for the management and oversight of the YMCA’s fundraising database and prospect management systems.  It is anticipated an average work-week will consist of 50 hours to complete duties.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategic Leadership/Program Planning & Management:

  • Responsible for effectively communicating the mission, vision and values of the Wichita YMCA.
  • Developing and leading the strategic and operational fundraising plan for the association’s Strong Community Campaign, special campaign initiatives and events.
  • Responsible for leading association Annual Campaign and teams raising $2.4+ annually.
  • Participating in and crafting multi-year financial development strategies that ensure sustainable annual and long-term growth in philanthropic contributions.
  • Conceiving and executing plans for acquiring new donors including, but not limited to; direct email, e-solicitation, and the use of social media.
  • Developing plans and programs for new fundraising initiatives.
  • Managing a portfolio of high-potential donors.
  • Serving as a liaison for multi-branch development efforts, creating and implementing strategies designed for further engagement and financial support of the association to advance the mission.
  • Meeting regularly with the CEO, Branch Directors, and Financial Development team to review prospects and develop strategies for Annual Campaign, major donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • In conjunction with the CEO, COO and Branch Directors, establishing the funding priorities and goals for the fiscal year.
  • Serving as liaison to the branches and programs to coordinate fundraising strategies, and ensuring these strategies are appropriate to the mission of the Y.
  • Staying abreast of philanthropic, economic, social and educational trends related to fundraising; ensuring development staff are informed of changes in legislation and other trends and initiatives that might impact the association’s fundraising efforts.
  • Ensuring the Y’s stewardship of major donors makes supporting the association a personally fulfilling experience; conveying to donors that the association and its leaders care deeply about its supporters and appreciate what they have done for the Y by demonstrating the impact of their support has on the community.
  • Leveraging use of empirical and relevant data to inform decisions and define efficiencies.

Staff Management:

  • Responsible for overseeing financial development staff, including the data team.
  • Assisting in recruiting, retaining, motivating, coaching and mentoring of staff and volunteers.
  • Serving as a player-coach with respect to Annual Campaign, donor relations, stewardship and special campaign initiatives.

EFFECT ON END RESULT:   Increased giving to all donation area; Strong Community Campaign, major gifts, capital campaigns, planned giving and endowment.  Increased numbers of active board members at the Metro and Branch level.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum age of 24
  • Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in development operations as a senior development officer at a nonprofit, or higher education institution, with proven record of successful staff development and fundraising efforts to include; annual giving, major gifts, planned giving and capital campaigns
  • Minimum 4 years management experience with development programs in annual giving and/or major gifts with oversight in performance/relationship driven metrics and accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to create fundraising strategies tied to a broader institutional vision, in alignment with the strategic plan of an association
  • Deep understanding and appreciation for the philanthropic process and individual giving behaviors combined with direct solicitation experience
  • Must have comprehensive campaign experience
  • Demonstrated experience galvanizing volunteers to the highest levels of satisfaction and performance
  • Advanced experience in recruiting and developing staff and teams
  • Comprehensive knowledge of strategies employed in all annual giving functions
  • Proven record of significant personal success in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship at major gift levels, as evidenced through professional references and reputation
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills to effectively build trust and motivate and inspire others
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of gift acceptance practices
  • Must have excellent oral written skills and ability to communicate with a wide variety of constituents to include high-profile leaders

  • Must be able to travel when necessary

  • Must possess problem solving, organizational and task management skills; ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment
  • Must be detail oriented and exhibit a high degree of accuracy and alertness
  • Must demonstrate initiative in absence of supervision
  • Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner
  • Must work collaboratively as a team member as well as independently and lead by assigned goals, duties and deadlines
  • Must possess ability to exercise high levels of discretion and confidentiality
  • Must present a neat and professional appearance at all times
