Reporting to the Vice President of National Geographic Labs (NatGeo Labs), the Product Owner is responsible for directing the implementation of digital products developed under NatGeoLabs, including the Geographic Visualization Lab, the Exploration Technology Lab, and Citizen Explorer Lab. S/he will be responsible for overseeing the day to day, timetable, communication, and progress of digital development projects. The product owner will work in close collaboration with the NatGeo Labs Leadership Team to advise on digital product strategy, market mapping, and agile product management. The product owner will be the Labs interface with all National Geographic’s relevant service units for digital product development. S/he will ensure that products are ultimately being created for their role in documenting, communicating, and preserving, the importance of cultural and biological diversity globally.
- Distill requirements from NatGeo Labs Leadership Team for Labs’ digital product vision and represent that vision on a day-to-day basis in internal and external developer meetings. (40%)
- Assist labs leadership in establishing and maintaining external digital product relationships (vendors, contractors, partners) as well as engaging directly with the National Geographic explorer community. (20%)
- Ensure a product support framework is in place as needed on the NatGeo Labs side, to include the creation of training materials, technical support, and management of current and future product inventory. (15%)
- Support NatGeo Labs initiatives and projects by providing advice on digital solutions. (15%)
- Digital project management for internal prototyping and demonstration purposes. (10%)
Minimum Years and Types of Experience
- 3 to 5 years of experience as a web developer and at least 2 year of experience in digital project management or as a digital product owner.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Candidate should be team oriented, but confident in the value of his or her own ideas, contribution, and role, and be able to exercise independent judgment.
- Not afraid to work as an individual contributor or take on a project manager role as needed.
- Web development knowledge in Javascript, PHP, Python, ArcGIS, and SQL.
