Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is a 1,200 acre property owned by San Antonio Water System and managed by the National Audubon Society. Mitchell Lake welcomes over 10,000 visitors each year from across the world, and over 4,000 students attending our STEM-focused, outdoor environmental education program, Nature of Learning.

The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is open to the public and is committed to its mission to connect people to nature through conservation and community education focused on birds and their habitats. With over 340 species of bird documented onsite, Mitchell Lake Audubon Center is a vital stopover for birds migrating along the central flyway.

The Seasonal Educator works with the Senior Education Manager to prepare and present high quality environmental education programs at the center. The Seasonal Educator aids in pre and post evaluation, program delivery, marketing, education volunteer recruitment, and program preparation. The Senior Education Manager will be the supervisor. The position is full time with an average of 40 hours per week. Number of hours will vary depending on the season, and some overnight camping may be required. The position is expected to begin in early April 2018 and remain through June 2018. No housing is provided. There is potential for this position to be full-time permanent as of July 2018, based on performance and funding.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Educate, engage, and steward opportunities intentionally guiding participants to contribute to conservation outcomes outline in the  
  • Help Audubon staff to develop and deliver environmental education and public programs including pre and post materials that correlate with academic curriculum standards and goals
  • Engage more than 4,000 students in on-site environmental education programming
  • Assist in facilitating offsite educational programming and outreach.
  • Maintain accurate records of program participation
  • Market programs, events, and volunteer opportunities to schools and the general public.
  • Assist with animal care and office duties as needed
  • Welcome and check in visitors as needed
  • Assist in store sales and membership promotion as needed
  • Assist with other aspects of running a nature center, such as helping with special events, public education programs (Conservation TREKS overnight camping program), answering requests for information from the public, assist with animal care, and helping with many other facets of a Nature Center's day to day operation.

Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in education, natural science or other related fields, or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills required
  • Proficient writing and speaking skills in English (Spanish proficiency a plus)
  • A self- starter, with a positive and enthusiastic approach to all tasks
  • Demonstrate genuine interest in the Audubon mission of connecting people and communities to nature and the outdoors
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Willingness to work cooperatively as part of a staff team
  • Collaborates well with coworkers, students (children of all ages), and the public including teachers, parents, and volunteers
  • Experience instructing outdoor programming preferred
  • Knowledge of how to use a computer, MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and social media platforms
  • Knowledge of Point of Sales systems or willingness to learn
  • Able to drive a car, have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Be able to carry at least 30 pounds and enjoy outdoor work
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment with multiple deadlines while effectively managing priorities.
  • Must be a creative, knowledgeable, and hardworking person dedicated to education and the environment.
  • Position involves moderate hiking, wading in water, handling live animals, equipment maintenance, digging, planting, transporting equipment, and the potential for overnight camping.
  • First Aid and CPR certification is preferred; Wilderness First Aid a plus.
  • Camping, kayak, and other outdoor recreational experience a plus
  • Knowledge of curriculum development or education standards a plus
