Under the direction of the Vice President Healthy Living & Social Responsibility and in accordance with the mission and values of the Ann Arbor YMCA, the Director of Healthy Living provides strategic and operational direction to all Health Management initiatives, as well overseeing the day-to-day operational function of the wellness center, personal training, and group exercise programming.

This position serves as the Healthy Living Champion for the association, and leads initiatives to increase the YMCA’s positioning in the community as a leading partner in addressing chronic health challenges. This position is also responsible for managing the wellness related financials, relationship building, supervision of staff, volunteer development and for being a YMCA advocate in the community. A strong focus is placed on delivering a superior member experience, enhancing the membership connection/engagement, thereby leading to increasing member satisfaction and retention. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Member Engagement & Retention:

  • Administration of Wellness Center including but not limited to: orientations for new members and daily experience of members in the center; implementation of member engagement program initiatives.
  • Cultivate member relationships – with the goal to move members through casual, connected, committed cycle. This includes cultivating members for volunteers to programs, committees, Board of Directors and Annual Campaign. 
  • Shared responsibility for member service and membership retention. Develops and manages member engagement events and programs.
  • Act as member of management team; provide informal assistance in facility supervision and facility usage guidelines implementation.
  • Assist in the Annual Campaign.
  • Assist in association special events.

Program and Facility Operations:

  • Supervise all daily operations related to the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, Pedaling for Parkinson’s, Enhance Fitness, Moving for Better Balance, Livestrong and Blood Pressure management programs. Lead the development and implementation of other primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention programs as needed. 
  • Establish relationships with public health, physician, and payer communities and other referral networks to enhance awareness of and referrals to the programs.
  • Assist in developing relationships with local hospitals, medical providers, and other community health organizations to develop program sponsorship opportunities.
  • Responsible for the promotion and supervision of Wellness Center, health and wellness programs including but not limited to: yoga, Studio Cycling and youth and adult fitness programs. Incorporate a schedule of program evaluation and follow up.
  • Oversees the development and expansion of Personal Training programming, and seeks to develop a culture of health among all wellness staff, where staff are educated and empowered to support individuals in achieving personal wellness, reducing risk of health-related illness, and reclaiming health following illness or injury.
  • Collect and organize data related to programs; regularly analyze data from programs to ensure they meet quality performance standards. Use data from SEER membership surveys to enhance and elevate the member experience.
  • With the guidance of the VP Social Responsibility, develop, manage, and administer budgets for wellness (fitness), personal training, health management, and yoga departments and make changes as necessary. Provide fee increase recommendations. Investigate trends in finances according to monthly and annual reports. Constantly review and complete program analysis for responsible fiscal control.
  • Supervise facilities, equipment and other maintenance needs related to providing safe, effective and accessible Wellness Center. Monitor and order equipment as needed.
  • Work with Communications Director and other association staff to develop and refine program brochures and material as necessary.

Team Leadership:

  • Serve as a liaison, ambassador, and advocate for the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention, EnhanceFitness, Livestrong, Pedaling for Parkinson’s, and Moving for Better Balance programs within public health, physician and payer communities. 
  • Recruit, train and supervise a diverse team staff and volunteers involved in the delivery and administration of wellness center and health and wellness programming; supervise non-exempt staff, including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, scheduling, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving issues. Lead and train staff in sales, customer service, promotions and program registration.
  • Supervise Wellness & Group Exercise Coordinator to deliver quality wellness/group exercise programming creating increased member value in the areas of wellness. Supervise two Health Management Coordinators to deliver tertiary health programming, and position the Y as a credible Community Integrated Health partner.
  • Advocate for association-wide policies and practices, and develop innovative ways to grow the membership experience, base, and practices through wellness.
  • Provide collaborative leadership and guidance to peers through association-wide leadership meetings, direct one-on-one best practice sharing with peers both in and outside the facility.
  • Develop and monitor staff development plans and training opportunities that promote career growth within the Y.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Ensure all Ann Arbor YMCA wellness standards and best practices are implemented and followed. Apply YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to best practices, emergency procedures, medical and disciplinary situations and child abuse prevention.
  • Ensure all wellness staff are properly trained and prepared for emergency situations. This includes implementing and following training requirements in addition to ensuring proper reporting of all incidents/accidents according to risk management procedures.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in exercise science, or a related field from an accredited university is required. A masters degree in Public Health, or Medical Administration is an advantage.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Candidate must have at least one year of experience in the implementation of health and wellness, health intervention, or public health programs. Experience in a health care system, or in a clinical integratuion setting is preferred.
  • A minimum of one-year experience in supervising, recruiting and training staff is required. Experience with volunteers is preferred. 
  • Budgeting skills are required.
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be an energetic, creative and goal-oriented person.
  • Must have good knowledge of basic business principles, sound reasoning ability and high aptitude for working with people.
  • The director works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.
  • Multi-lingual ability is preferred.
Compensation/Benefits: 

 

Salary: $42,911.00 - $50,957.00
