This short-term, summer position is responsible for the stewardship and protection of two shoreline preserves in Old Lyme, Connecticut; Griswold Point and Hatchetts Point (easement property managed by the Conservancy). Good communication skills essential. Position will begin mid-April (or when filled) and end by Labor Day. The preserves contain nesting pairs of Piping Plovers, federally threatened birds, and Least Terns, state threatened.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Survey and monitor nesting piping plovers and least terns.
  • Maintain fences, signs, and remove litter.
  • Interact with preserve visitors and convey basic preserve information in a tactful manner
  • Promote good public relations for the preserves and The Nature Conservancy with members of the general public and local community.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the preserves, their flora and fauna, and be able to convey this to the public.
  • Provide on-site presence to discourage unauthorized and destructive use of preserves.
  • Work up to 35 hours per week, including all weekends and holidays.
  • Cooperate with State DEEP staff and partner organizations responsible for statewide plover and tern management.
  • Assist, as needed, with invasive species removal and site restoration.    
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience           
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  •  Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Experience operating canoes/kayaks
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application)

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with bird observation and behavior preferable.
  • Ability to keep accurate and timely records of observations.
  • Ability to work effectively with volunteers and public.
  • Experience or ability to safely use basic maintenance tools.
  • Experience operating canoes/kayaks
  • Ability to follow instructions
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English, Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross cultural experience welcomed.
  • Possession of driver’s license and reliable transportation
