Minnesota Marshbird Survey Technician

Audubon Minnesota is seeking survey technicians to conduct standardized bird surveys.  The data collected during these surveys will be used to model marshbird distribution and abundance, allowing us to better understand the habitat preferences of focal species.

This is a seasonal, full-time up to 40 hour/week position commencing mid- April and continuing through end of June.  Occasional weekends may be required.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conduct surveys by sight and sound  in both the early morning and evening.
  • Record data on location, date, time, and species of each bird encountered on data sheets and enter online.  Collect, organize and analyze data.
  • Provide supporting field notes on observations of unusual or unexpected species.
  • Interaction with various land managers.
  • Provide volunteer support and training under the guidance of project coordinator.
Educational Background: 
Must be working toward or have received a Bachelor's Degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • An interest in avian research and conservation; familiarity with Minnesota marshbirds, including the ability identify by sight and sound, a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Experience working with partners and volunteers
  • Must also have demonstrated experience with performing field work in challenging conditions, including inclement weather.
  • Ability to work with and interpret maps. GIS background a plus.
  • Excellent data collection and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, to include Word, Excel and Access.
  • Willingness to follow precise protocol (Conway 2009) with some adaptations.
  • Willingness and ability to work in various outdoor situations, including maneuvering off-trail and in wetlands, with or without accommodation.
  • Willingness and ability to conduct in-state travel and to work early mornings/evenings and weekends as job responsibilities require.
