The successful candidate will provide dynamic, executive leadership to the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance—consisting of 35 YMCA associations -- and, in partnership with the Board of Directors, enact and implement a strategic vision to strengthen and expand the alliance. The Board of Directors desires a candidate with the skills to move the alliance forward. The successful candidate’s duties will include championing and communicating the Alliance’s mission and relevance; being responsible for the alliance’s financial stability and growth; engaging, communicating and collaborating with the Board of Directors and other Alliance members as well as community, corporate and government leaders; and overseeing the alliance’s day-to-day administrative operations, which include organizing and leading key Alliance meetings and conferences: Annual Dinner, CEO Institute, Alliance CEOs and Board of Directors meetings, etc..  

Strategic priorities for the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance are under development with the revision of a strategic plan.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Relationship Development: 

  • Builds and maintains alliances with state legislators, grant makers, other partners and their staff members.   Builds an effective and highly visible partnership between the YMCAs and the State Agencies and Legislative Leaders that position the Y as the State’s “Go To” non-profit alliance for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility initiatives. Provide leadership for the Alliance meetings, Alliance Public Policy and Advocacy events.  Maintain a visible presence throughout the State interacting with key constituents including Corporate and Foundation leadership.  

Board Development:  

  • Provides support and leadership to the Board of Directors; recommends and implements appropriate alliance policies; reports to the Board on matters affecting the welfare of the alliance; serves as a resource to the Board; effectively identifies and utilizes Board member’s talent and resources; and supports the Board’s committees and the Board’s current and new members.  A facilitative leader that can work in partnership with board members and all Alliance members to inform, influence and motivate all NJ Ys to be regularly engaged.  

Communication:  

  • Strategically position the NJ YMCA State Alliance as an organization strong in its ability to manage multi-component initiatives and projects.  Proactively identifies and communicates beneficial opportunities to the Board and/or the YMCA associations. Communicates positive messaging proactively and provides regular reports with updates of objectives and activities specific to the Board and other stakeholders. Effectively communicates with internal and external stakeholders and ensures that the alliance’s mission, vision, values and goals are easily understood.  Maintains the accuracy and timeliness of the Alliance website and all Social Media activities.

Strategic Direction: 

  • Works with Board of Directors to create and achieve goals outlined in the strategic plan (currently in development) within the areas (may alter after completion of plan) of Public Policy, Leadership Development including Thriving Y initiatives, Strategic Initiatives, Financial Development and Volunteer Development.  Recommends and implements long-term vision and strategies that will allow the alliance to enhance its existing strengths and create new growth opportunities.

Fiscal Management:  

  • Ensures and sustains fiscal integrity and financial stability to maintain   statewide efforts.  Working effectively with vendors and contractors as well as staff, assures adequate funding to achieve NJ YMCA State Alliance priorities. Responsible for meeting fiscal goals which include but are not limited to:
    • Developing specialized campaigns and creative revenue streams; including securing grants to support state-wide programs and initiatives.
    • Builds effective management systems that will effectively support increased levels of contributed support (campaigns, events and other)
    • Develops and recommends an annual budget for Board approval and ensures prudent fiscal management, reporting and controls. Manages to budget, particularly to foresee and avoid funding vulnerabilities or shortfalls.
    • Oversees all the Alliance’s financial operations.
    • Implements strategies to solidify the Alliance’s current fundraising efforts and implement tactics to expand and maximize new fundraising strategies and opportunities.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university with a major in business, political science, public policy, communications or related field required.
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:

  • Proven leadership in professional, business environment required.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a collaborative based organization model.
  • Proven ability to develop and strengthen community relationships required.
  • Proven expertise in organizational and management skills, including effectively leading and developing staff team(s).

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

  • Lobbying/public policy experience.
  • Experience in strategic planning, board management, public policy, government relations and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  • Proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working independently and effectively developing and directing diverse staff members.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00
