The Communications Associate will work closely with the Communications Director to create content for strategic communications and branding materials, manage digital communications, facilitate internal communications, copy-edit, produce social media and blogs, and conduct political and issue research. The Communications Associate works closely with multiple consultants, sometimes directly or indirectly managing them depending on projects. These include: a social media firm, a digital advocacy firm, designers, researchers, writers, and editors. The Communications Associate will also be responsible for managing the work of the NRDC Action Fund’s political research intern. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer, creative team player and fast learner with an interest in the intersection of politics and the environment.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Communications

  • Create and distribute operations reports and weekly board updates
  • Draft board book materials and presentations
  • Copy-edit
  • Pitch and write blog posts
  • Online communications / social media manager
    • Manage vendor relationships and workflow
    • Draft, edit and post Facebook and Twitter content regularly
    • Update/upload YouTube account with new videos
    • Manage WordPress for website updates/blogs/press releases
  • Provide support to the Communications Director to:
    • Provide backup for directing press to the relevant expert
    • Create written content
    • Develop strategic communications and branding materials
    • Manage special communications projects / campaigns

 Research

  • Conduct assigned research projects
  • Draft race and candidate memos
  • Create politician bios
  • Track candidates’ issue positions/ rankings
  • Draft monthly and ad hoc Political Activities Committee materials
  • Attend candidate meetings / interviews
  • Create issue factsheets for grasstops
Educational Background: 
Bachelors degree in Communications, Political Science or other relevant area
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1- 3 years of communications experience
  • Excellent writing and copy-editing skills 
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of social media (including Twitter, Facebook) and blogging
  • Strong organizational and planning skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks independently in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Experience in political research and an intellectual curiosity in the intersection of politics and environmental policy
  • Knowledge of WordPress software
  • Highly self-directed
