The Public Policy Manager will plan and manage federal, state and local grassroots advocacy efforts in order to achieve the public policy goals of the Alzheimer's Association in Southern California. This position is located in the Southland office in Beverly Hills, CA.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Collaborate with Chapter Executives, Alzheimer's Association Ambassadors, advocates, State Policy Director, and coalition partners in outreach to legislators, legislative staff, and representatives of government at the federal, state, and local levels to promote an understanding of and support for policies, programs, and services to meet the needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease, their families, and their caregivers.
  • In coordination with other Alzheimer's Association public policy staff in California, develop and work with coalitions, committees, task forces, and other partners to advance critical issues.
  • Serve as staff liaison and help develop Chapter Public Policy Committees in executing appropriate strategies and tactics to achieve the Association's public policy goals.
  • Engage and train Chapter staff and volunteers in advocacy activities.
  • Build and support a Chapter-wide, grassroots network of trained volunteer advocates to carry out the Association's advocacy goals and ensure timely and effective response to policy developments when action is required.
  • Manage the database of public policy advocates and provide reporting on advocacy recruitment as well as advocate and staff contacts with federal and state.
  • With chapter Communications staff, coordinate contacts with media, including press releases and letters to the editor around public policy issues.
  • Plan and implement participation in public policy special events.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in political science, law, communications, or related field. An equivalent of education and experience may be considered
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislative, regulatory, and budget processes
  • Ability to work effectively with advocate volunteers, staff, and external contacts.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and strategic thinking skills
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy, and initiative
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, organize, and analyze public policy opportunities
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities
  • Absolute commitment to confidentiality
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Ability to travel locally, regionally and nationally as needed to perform job duties
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; proficiency with  CRM databases a plus
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in advocacy with non-profit organizations preferred
  • Understanding of Alzheimer's, aging, health care and long term care issues is preferred
  • Political campaign experience in California state or federal races a plus
