WWF is looking for a Communications Officer to support the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project. This person ideally will be based in Peru (Colombia or Brazil will be considered). The project will work across the Amazon Basin in Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Peru, and Suriname improve representation of indigenous peoples in governance of Amazon forests and waters, so they may contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and prevention of land-based greenhouse gas emissions in and around their lands. Under the supervision of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project Chief of Party, the Communications Officer will be a member of the the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project Team, responsible for ensuring the development and implementation of a communications strategy for the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project. This includes sharing the Project’s successes and lessons, and projecting a positive and constructive image of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project and its partners locally and globally. In addition, the Communications Officer will be responsible for communicating The Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project’s stand on local and global issues of environmental concern in an appropriate way; and coordinating quality control of all Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project’s outreach materials including media content.
Develop and implement the Communications Strategy for the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project
- In close coordination with the Chief of Party and other Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project ariyo Ban staff, develops the Communications Strategy of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project and periodically reviews it in view of changing ground realities and program focus. The strategy will identify key behavior changes that are desired to achieve the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project’s objectives, the messages involved, target audiences for these messages, and communication methods to reach them. It will be broadly in line with the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project’s core partners’ communications strategies and practices. The Communications Officer will convert the strategy into doable actions with timelines and budget, and coordinate project resources including its human resources to ensure completion of these strategic actions.
Engage media to promote the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project
- Engages with Media as indicated by the strategy, as one means to ensure communication of key messages and lessons coming from the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project , and to promote information about the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project objectives and activities. Provides leadership with innovative tools, share lessons learned, expand network of journalists informed on IP rights and resources issues, biodiversity conservation, and infrastructure threats. Provides guidance on the use of social networks and new information technologies
Coordinate production of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project ’s outreach materials, publications and events
- Based on the communication strategy, prepare and execute a schedule of all regular publications. Coordinates with the appropriate Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project partner staff to ensure timely production of regular and one-off publications, other communication materials, presentations etc. Ensure high quality production of all materials. in line with the core parnters’ communication standards and guidelines where they exist. Support the organization of communication events for the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project, including preparation of materials and presentations. Promote the use of local language to the extent practically possible including the web.Coordinates with Amazon Knowledge Learning Platform contractor on communication and reporting procedures. Establish partnerships with journalism organizations, universities, professional societies to organize capacity building events and training courses to improve communication outreach. Establish a community of practice with implementing partners.
Knowledge Management
- Adopt a shared vision for knowledge management that encourages the Amazon Coordination Unit, Objective Team Leaders, WWF country offices, and implementing partners to make knowledge sharing and exchange central to all organizations including USAID
Share Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project ’s success stories and lessons
- Through field visits and communication with relevant Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project staff, identifies, develops and shares important success stories and lessons with appropriate audiences using the best tools and communication media. Ensures that the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project is contributing its learning to local and national audiences, as well as the global conservation and climate change communities.
Support Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project partners to communicate about the program and its findings
- Provide Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project information and materials to core partners, USAID and other partners to play their roles in implementing the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project communication strategy, and for their own communications work. Promote open communication about how the partners are planning to communicate The Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project, and ensure harmonization of these efforts. where possible promoting joint communication. Ensure that communication materials, presentations etc are appropriately branded for the core partners, recognizing the contributions that each makes.
Build and Cement Relationship with USAID, and ensure USAID branding
- Regularly interacts with the USAID (directly and indirectly) to see to it that its requirements and expectations are met generally in terms of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project ’s communication activities. Ensures that the feedback from USAID is passed on to the right people in the organization, and works towards internalization of such feedback. Ensure that USAID branding and marking guidelines are followed in all Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project communications, unless there are official exceptions. Upload AIRR publications and reports to USAID CDIE clearing house.
Provide communication coaching and training
- As needed, provides communication coaching or training to staff of the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project core partners, and other partners including to effectively communicate the Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project messages.
Knowledge:
- IT knowledge especially the use of Photoshop and other designing / web designing tools required.
Experience:
- Candidate must have at least three to five years of outstanding experience in journalism/publications/communication works.
Skills and Abilities:
- The ideal candidate for this position will have a high level of attention to detail as well as a high level of enthusiasm for his/her work and the The Amazonian Indigenous Rights and Resources Project. along with strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills. Strong interpersonal and team-player skills are essential. Strong Spanish and English language skills are required, with Portuguese preferred. The candidate should have strong IT skills including microsoft office programs and design software. S/he should be effectively able to prioritize work, focusing on priorities without forgetting other tasks, and using initiative and good judgement. Ability to work to deadlines is essential. Good facilitation and coaching skills are an advantage. Must be able to travel extensively to the field, in sometimes rugged conditions (up to 25% travel).
