The Bird Monitor performs daily surveys of the entire shoreline and interoir portions of Port Tampa Bay Dredge Material Placement Facility 3D during the nesting season while the dredging contractor is actively disposing into the island; s/he will conduct the surveys only if the weather allows safe boating conditions. The project is expected to last at least eight weeks but is dependent on the progress of the the dredging operations.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Conduct an interior survey of the island during the nesting season to monitor the status of nesting bird species that may be affected by work in the disposal area. Conduct surveys of the shoreline by boat so as not to disturb nesting birds.
- Record all bird use of the island, with particular attention paid to the nesting species, especially American Oystercatchers.
- Record the location and status of all birds encountered on the island using Site Map and Birds Observed summary data sheets.
- Submit the Daily Migratory Bird Monitoring Report, Site Map and Birds Observed list to the contractor and all interested parties.
- Report any activities by the dredge contractor that requires work outside of the established work area or beyond normal daily operations such as mobilization and demobilization of equipment, repair of pipes and equipment; inspection of the disposal area by contractor staff, etc.
- Coordinate with the members of the Migratory Bird Protection Committee before implementing any plans to adjust activities on the island to avoid impacting nesting birds.
- Submit reports of nesting species to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Florida Shorebird Database.
- Submit a final report at the end of the nesting season or the end of the dredging activities to Audubon for editing and submission.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree with a background in marine, estuarine, or wetlands ecology (or equivalent, demonstrated work experience) preferred.
Skills/Experience:
- Excellent work ethic, a team-focused attitude, and the ability to work well independently in the field.
- Experience in Florida’s estuaries, mangrove forests and/or coastal wetlands, sampling and identification of coastal birds a plus.
- Valid driver’s license required, experience with small boats, and operating vehicles strongly preferred.
- Ability to maintain and repair mechanical equipment such as trucks and boats highly desirable.
- Comfort with engaging public and talking about the importance of protecting bird colonies.
- Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
- Familiarity with bird behavior and ability to recognize disturbance.
- Ability to perform job responsibilities in harsh, summer marine conditions.
