Under the general direction of the Senior Vice President-Finance/CFO, the Controller is responsible for the daily management of general accounting functions, including cash receipts, and accounts payable and for administering the approved accounting policies and procedures throughout the Association. The position is responsible for the preparation of complete and accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.  The Controller may assist in the preparation of the Association Operating Budget and the United Way Program Budget. The Controller is responsible for maintaining the fiscal integrity of all contract funded programs as well as for all transactions of the Association.  The Controller will work closely with branch executives, program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support their program operations.  In addition, s/he will partner with the Sr. VP-Finance/CFO, senior leadership, and the human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR and IT functions.  This position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Hire, train, supervise and manage all accounting personnel.  This includes any personnel required to maintain the fiscal records of the Association including accounts payable and receivable, grants management and general accounting areas.
  • Maintains an accounting system to accomplish the proper recording, measuring and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the Association for all funds.
  • Serves as resource person to branch and corporate personnel in all matters relating to accounting and accounts payable.
  • Supervises or prepares reconciliations of all Association bank accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Maintains detailed investment records of various investment portfolios for proper recording of transactions.
  • Prepares financial statements required by management and other outside agencies.
  • Prepares reports for various Federal and State agencies including preparation of the Federal 990 and NYS Informational Return.
  • Maintains records and supervises the preparation of grant reports.
  • Coordinates and facilitates annual YMCA audit: Prepares audit workpapers to Auditor's specifications. Cooperates with and facilitates the Auditor's work.  Ensures questions are answered and documentation is available to the Auditors.
  • Coordinates and supervises operating cash flow management.  Alerts the SVP-Finance of any potential difficulties in meeting daily financial obligations.
  • Prepares and controls Accounting Department budget.
  • Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required.
  • Risk assessment, which involves analyzing risks as well as identifying, describing and estimating the risks affecting the organization.
  • Conducting audits of policy and compliance to standards, including liaison with internal and external auditors.
  • Providing support, education and training to staff to build risk awareness within the organization.
  • Works closely with IT Department to ensure that computer and software systems provide accurate information and adequate internal controls.
  • Attend all required meetings, training and Association events.
  • Any and all other assignments as deemed appropriate by the SVP-Finance.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited college or university with an understanding of and experience in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are required. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least five years’ experience in a supervisory accounting role.  Controller should have a working knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management and must be highly computer literate with an ability to develop and use complex spreadsheets and manage software systems. 
  • Human relations and relationship building skills to maintain responsive and cooperative relationships are essential as the Controller has daily contact with other staff, branch personnel and outside vendors. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Controller must possess sound management skills as much of the position's success is determined and measured throughout the daily performance of the Controller's supervised accounting staff. 
  • CPA and experience in a not-for-profit environment is desirable. 
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $70,000.00 - $80,000.00
