The Director, Climate and Energy directs all aspects of protection, science, policy, stewardship and community relations for energy environment and climate change within China program. Serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community.
The Director, Climate and Energy establishes the Conservancy as a major partner in the field of climate change and energy policy in China. S/he defines policy and conservation priorities and long-term strategies, builds strategic, policy, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develops key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical and policy issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices. S/he develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs, , and negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and companies to tackle climate change. S/he leads TNC’s engagement on climate and energy polic, develops renewable project beyond TNC’s traditional business pattern, and integrates current climate work and conducts analysis of industry situation.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Leads TNC climate and energy policy work in China, including defining the Conservancy’s policy priorities and developing government and industry engagement plans.
- Coordinates with TNC scientists, policy experts and other colleagues to advance TNC’s global climate work.
- May be responsible for leading or co-leading a whole system program.
- Leads and manages team or project to support and improve conservation efforts.
- Manage multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. Establish clear directions and set stretch objectives.
- Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the department or program while controlling costs and administering budgets.
- Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.
- Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Frequently makes independent decision based on analysis, experience, and judgment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience developing partnerships (partners, community, government.
- Negotiation skills.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5-7 years’ experience in energy environmental practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing related policy and plans within the area of responsibility.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
- Demonstrated relationships with governmental and/or non-governmental agencies and partners.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
- Politically savvy and experienced in partnership development (partners, community, government)
