The Director of Indonesia Oceans Program oversees the Ocean program of Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN), and provides strategic leadership and support key initiatives on integrated oceans management strategy of protecting oceans for enhance resilience and restoration of valuable ecosystem services for people and economies. S/he plays a lead role in fundraising and communication for this work and as relationship lead to relevant external partners, both private and public.  S/he establishes overall conservation priorities to maximize contributions to the Conservancy’s Shared Conservation Agenda and to guide design and implementation of the program in Ocean teams across Indonesia.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Sustainable Oceans & Fisheries Management

  • Advancing system-scale conservation and management of iconic large marine regions and protected areas across the country, climate mitigation and resilience through the conservation and restoration of oceans and coastal ecosystems coupled with “smart” development.
  • Advancing Indonesia’s fishery towards sustainability by enhancing the impact of the work through selected priority fisheries to create demonstration of a better design for a blue growth that combines actions to conserve habitats critical for the oceans ecosystem function and values, particularly mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds and fish spawning or nursery areas.
  • Promotes better choices for blue economic development in and around Indonesia’s coastal and marine areas and for more sustainable coastal and marine fisheries. 
  • Brings innovative technology and mechanisms to the program strategy to create impact at larger scale that combines financial and other incentive mechanisms for rewarding good stewardship with technical applications for effective monitoring and control, particularly for mangrove conservation and snapper, grouper and tuna fisheries management across Indonesia.
  • Increases the sustainability of YKAN work by bridging corporate responsibility with enabling policies for sustainable investment to our priority areas, that engages companies and authorities through public private partnerships for blue growth.

Leadership & Capacity building (organization and teams)

  • Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field, develops key partnerships with public & private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices, and develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools, and frameworks to address the natural system needs.
  • Leads and manages a cross-functional team which designs, implements, and supports oceans and coastal conservation strategies.
  • Supports professional growth of oceans staff.

Secure & Mobilize Resources (Funding)

  • Collaborates with fundraising staff to fundraise for key projects and priorities and play a leading role in donor identification and cultivation. This includes identifying and networking with the potential donors, both bilateral/multilateral as well as from corporations.
  • Explores and creates long term revenue streams to ensure effective management of coastal habitat.
  • The Director reports to the Country Director and is based in Jakarta.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Geographic size and scope is that of a large, complex business unit, major geographic region within a very large business unit, multiple smaller business units, and divisional regional or at the national/global level.
  • Designs, implements, and directs complex and diverse projects, encompassing multiple programs and coordinating the work of other professionals, inside and outside the organization.  Incorporates cross-disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives.
  • Highly diversified work involves participation in the formulation and evaluation of broad policies and/or long-term programs, or making decisions, which typically have broad organizational impact.
  • Directs major program of strategic importance to the Conservancy through management of multi-disciplinary teams, such as a whole system program.
  • High level management and leadership responsibility for 10+ staff members, both internal and external to the organization.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.                                                                                                                           Makes independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience and context.
  • May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree and 12 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals and coordinating the work of partners while meeting deadlines.  
  • Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.   
  • Experience networking with high level conservation contacts.
  • Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.
  • Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives.
  • Experience negotiating.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Master’s degree and 12-15 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs. 
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
  • Politically savvy.
