The Senior Accountant supports two managers, one who is responsible for financial reporting and one who is responsible for tax compliance for National Public Radio, Inc. (NPR) and NPR Foundation (NPRF). The Senior Accountant will perform daily operational activities such as account analysis, account reconciliations, as well as the preparation of the monthly and quarterly financial statements and tax returns for National Public Radio, Inc. and the NPR Foundation (hereinafter, collectively referred to as “NPR”). The Senior Accountant must stay abreast of changing accounting requirements and government regulations as well as monitor accounting transactions and activities to ensure sound external compliance-reporting.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Support timely monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles
  • Analyze general ledger account activity by performing reconciliations; expected to explain, document, and resolve reconciling items
  • Evaluate transactions to determine proper accounting treatment
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and organizational policies and bring exceptions and recommendations to management’s attention immediately
  • Understand and prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements and footnotes for the consolidated entity, as well as standalone financial statements and footnotes for NPR. Maintain consolidating schedules for all financial statements and footnotes through-out the year
  • Prepare schedules and pull together information required by the independent auditors
  • Support the preparation of IRS Forms 990 and 990-T as well as state income tax returns for NPR
  • Prepare sales and use tax returns, government compliance, unclaimed property and FBAR compliance reports for NPR, which includes obtaining information from various departments within NPR  
  • Prepare compliance reports for government agencies, sales and use tax returns, and various supporting documentation 
  • Build productive relationships throughout the Finance division 
  • Perform ad hoc financial and tax analysis as needed
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree in accounting or a related field from a four-year accredited institution
Skills/Experience: 

Required Skills:

  • Three to five years accounting experience required (experience at a nonprofit is a differentiating factor)
  • Demonstrated understanding of GAAP accounting principles and ability to use accounting guidance tools to research and document accounting concepts, theories, and practices relating to the organization transactions
  • Be well-versed in computer-based accounting systems and internet applications and proficient in use of Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Display self-confidence, knowledge, and be a quick study possessing a critical perspective and an ability to make decisions and take action
  • Proven written/oral communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively as a member of a team of diverse individuals
  • Possess good problem-solving skills and be able to craft and analyze options and make specific recommendations that enhance the company’s overall objectives and goals
  • Proven analytical skills; detail-oriented
