The Swim Team Head Coach is responsible for planning and operation of the Swim Team in accordance with the guidelines of the YMCA of the USA, YMCA of Kanawha Valley and USA swimming and is cooperatively responsible for the safe operation of the swimming pool. The Head Coach will also coordinate and oversee the YMCA Learn to Swim Program.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Organizes and leads all aspects of the Swim Team program, including practices, meets and related events. Complies with all YMCA and league rules and guidelines.
- Maintains regular, positive communication with swimmers, parents and YMCA staff.
- Disseminates all rules and regulations during practices and swim meets.
- Implements the YMCA of Kanawha Valley's survey collection procedures ensuring the collection of critical customer feedback.
- Supervises and evaluates assistant coaches and volunteers.
- Compiles the statistical data necessary for various program reports.
- Maintains good connections with the Swim Team Parents Committee through meeting attendance and regular communications.
- Attends all practices, swim meets and league meetings.
- Plan and organizes all home swim meets.
- Manages electronic swim team management and communication system.
- Organizes and directs the summer competitive swimming season.
- Organizes and directs all swim lessons
- Cooperatively supervises personnel and volunteers as needed. Helps develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
- Cooperatively assures maintenance of necessary certifications, continuing professional growth and adherence with all risk management policies and procedures.
- Exercises necessary controls to assure operations are carried out and a balanced fiscal operation exists.
- Cooperatively monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations and to maintain safe operational standards.
- Enforces all pool safety rules and implements pool emergency procedures when necessary, including completion of Incident Report Forms.
- Be Alert, Friendly and Responsive to swimmers, parents and co-workers.
- Ensure proper installation and usage of pool equipment, i.e., lane lines, emergency equipment, etc.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Carry Out other duties as assigned by a Program Director, Branch Director, or CEO.
Skills/Experience:
- The incumbent must be at least 21 years of age, have a clear driving record and be qualified to drive a YMCA vehicle. Preferred incumbent will have a minimum of two years of competitive swimming experience and two years of competitive coaching experience. Extensive knowledge of competitive swimming, physics of swimming and stroke mechanics, and dry land development.
- This position requires mental alertness, the ability see, hear project voice and move effectively with sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities. Must be able to effectively communicate with youth and adults, enforce pool rules and make independent decisions that adhere to the purpose, mission and goals of the Y.
- The incumbent is responsible for recruiting, training and supervising volunteer leaders and part time employees under his/her jurisdiction. The incumbent must possess a valid and current Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Training and CPR certifications. Required to either currently possess or achieve certification for YMCA coaching, USA swimming and lifeguarding within 90 days of hire date. Must be experience in Hytek, Meet Manager, Team Manager and Microsoft Office.
