This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Develops, organizes and implements high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs.  Director of Aquatics is also responsible for aquatics safety through the supervision of the Associate Director of Aquatics.

Under the supervision of the Branch Executive, the Director of Aquatics will oversee aquatic operations across two indoor pools and off-site summer camp pool rentals. The aquatics department leads an annual operating budget of $700,000 as part of the Branch annual operating budget of $9 Million, servicing 14,000 members and 6,000 non-members.  

Areas of Responsibility: 

Aquatics Programming:

  • Responsible for the creation and successful maintenance of the Aquatics budget, complete monthly variance reports, board reports, and forecasting.
  • Implement the approved budget through the proactive planning of purchases based on need and the monthly spread, complete purchase orders in a timely manner.
  • Provide monthly sales goals; train, motivate and empower staff to meet these goals.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Oversee the Y Group and Private Swim Lesson Program (Parent/Child, Preschool, Youth, and Adult); including curriculum development, staff training, risk management compliance, equipment needs, program evaluation and maintaining high quality.   
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.  Respond in a timely manner to requests, questions, concerns and/or complaints.
  • Maintain proper swim evaluation procedures as per timing of session registration.  Ensure instructors complete progress reports in a professional and informative manner.  Provide students and parents with feedback and recommendations for follow-up placement.   
  • Maintain accurate attendance records; complete credit and refunds as necessary and in a timely manner. 
  • Ensure staff schedules are in accordance with budget and upholding quality.  Maintain staff records of substitutions, requests for time off and attendance. 
  • Host informative and effective in-service trainings and staff meetings.  
  • Maintain open communication with the Welcome Center in relation to program changes and program cancellations.
  • Create and lead Aquatic-based pathways and programs, such as the ‘2nd Grade Swim Initiative’, to help support the Y’s mission to expand knowledge about water safety.
  • Apply the above responsibilities to all Warminster Aquatic Programming, where applicable.

Lifeguard Supervision and Aquatic Safety:

  • Ensure both pools are consistently and adequately staffed with highly trained, professional and courteous lifeguards. All lifeguards are rescue-ready, consistently in uniform, scanning left to right and bottom to top.
  • Ensure the aquatic environments are safe; decks are clean and free of clutter, water clarity is clear and chemically safe. Pool rules are enforced professionally, and all locker rooms and sauna are monitored by aquatics staff 
  • In accordance with insurance carrier:  Weekly/monthly lifeguard drills are occurring and accurate records of completion are maintained. 
  • Ensure lifeguards are recruited, trained and developed with ongoing feedback and support. Lifeguard schedule adheres to budget. All lifeguards’ certifications are up to date.
  • Oversee the execution of the Lifeguard Training Program, meeting budget and community need.   Paperwork is processed in a timely fashion with the American Red Cross. 
  • Ensure Quick Checks are completed at minimum 200 per month; Y leadership is continually educated on the importance of aquatic safety. 
  • Ensure aquatic birthday parties and/or rentals are safe, children are swim tested and pool rules are reviewed.
  • Staffing and risk at Warminster pool locations are upheld to the above standards, where applicable.    
  • Supervise Associate Director of Aquatics and Aquatic Coordinator.
  • Maintain open communication with the Director of Youth Development - Camp and Teen to ensure a safe, high quality, camp experience for both Doylestown and Warminster camp locations.
  • Audit the pool deck weekly and order necessary safety equipment.

General Functions:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed.  Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Serve as a substitute when staff has not secured replacement or fail to show.
  • Maintain open communication with marketing as per brochure requirements and as needed to maintain attendance levels as per budget. 
  • Collaborate with Regional Director of Competitive Aquatics with pool schedule planning and various reporting as requested. 
  • Positively and proactively communicate with colleagues. Respond in a timely manner to requests, questions and/or concerns.
  • Attend organizational meetings as required, included but not limited to Staff Stakeholders, Come Together Meetings, etc.   
  • Support organizational and membership retention initiatives.  
  • Follow HR and Risk Management policies and procedures of the institution.  Serve on Risk Management Committee.
  • Assure compliance with SEFA policies for volunteers and staff.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events
  • Play a significant role in leading the Living Our Cause experience. 
  • Complete accident/incident report follow-up within 24 hours; submit to Branch Executive.
  • Generate required reports for Branch Executive and/or Association.  
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Possess and maintain current American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard Certification 
  • Possess and maintain WSI certification; YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor preferred 
  • Must be people oriented and possess excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Listen First training within six months of employment.
