The Director of Strategic Communications for the Global Climate Action Summit will be employed by the United Nations Foundation and seconded to the office of the Governor of California. The Director of Strategic Communications will lead a team to develop and execute a communications strategy, engaging both traditional and non-traditional media outlets and platforms. The Director of Strategic Communications will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with the media, including relationships with existing media partners of UNF and the State of California. Additionally, the Director of Strategic Communications will collaborate with the Director of Partnerships and the fundraising team to produce marketing material for a variety of potential sponsors. This role will also work closely with Governor Brown’s press office and the UNF communications team, to ensure that all communications align with the objectives of the Global Climate Action Summit.
- Collaborate with Summit staff and the Governor’s press team to develop and execute communications strategy, engaging both traditional and non-traditional media outlets and platforms
- Develop overall messaging for Summit as well as for each of the key substantive delivery announcements
- Build amplification strategy customized to leverage partners’ communication capacities and platforms
- Coordinate management relationships with media partners and leverage those relationships for greater amplification of the Summit in collaboration with the Governor’s press team
- Oversee the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to concept notes, slide decks, and the Summit website
- Schedule media interviews and provide appropriate background information to leadership and/or surrogates for all Summit media events in collaboration with the Governor’s press team
- Manage and produce content for all Summit social media campaigns
- Manage 1-3 communications team staff
- Work closely with the Director of Partnerships and the fundraising team to define and execute partner and fundraising engagement strategies
- Manage all Summit-related communications through the end of 2018
- 7+ years of experience in communications for a national organization and/or campaign
- Strong management experience and ability to liaise with multiple teams to drive success
- Strong attention to detail and demonstrated excellence working in a fast-paced environment; ability to manage multiple priorities
- Strong professional interpersonal skills and diplomacy
- Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team
- Experience working with members of the press, pitching stories and getting them placed in various types of news outlets
- Previous experience with event communications preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
- Interest, knowledge of or experience in climate policy
- Ability to work under pressure and handle stress
