The Communications Assistant will provide administrative and research support to the Federal Communications team in our Washington DC office. Beyond possessing the necessary administrative skills, the ideal candidate is one with a demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment, prioritize assignments, work as a member of a fast-paced team and proactively interface with individuals from all departments throughout a 600+ member organization. The successful candidate must be an excellent multitasker and possess strong written, verbal communications and basic research skills. A working knowledge of the fast-changing world of the news (and social) media would be a plus.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assisting with project management and tracking of advocacy communications work.
  • Assisting with the editing, formatting, production and distribution of press releases, editorial board statements, reports, and other documents.
  • Scheduling and facilitation of various staff and general meetings.
  • Fielding inquiries from the press and general public by phone and e-mailing efficiently and with a professional demeanor.
  • Processing invoices, monthly business expenses on behalf of staff members.
  • Providing general administrative support for federal communications staff members, including making travel arrangements, recording meeting notes, and coordinating catering.
  • Providing coverage for other staff assistants and reception when needed.
  • Developing and coordinating press coverage reports, helping draft and circulate summaries of weekly press hits.
  • Assisting with the distribution of blogs and other communications to the press.
  • Assisting with research on press coverage, the media landscape, specific policy issues, and other topics.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-3 years previous administrative or professional experience.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and be detail oriented.
  • Must have the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks accurately and according to procedure.
  • Must possess a high degree of proficiency with the Microsoft office suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Willingness to be available for occasional overtime work
  • Interest in environmental issues a plus.
