The DUNE RESTORATION SPECIALIST – CREW MEMBER performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management. 

The Dune Restoration Specialist – Crew Member will work as part of a field crew to implement invasive species control at sites located along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the Northwest Lower Peninsula of Michigan.  Control methods include both manual removal (via steel spade) and chemical treatment (via appropriately-applied herbicide).  Individuals will work with employees of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SLBE), Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC), Northwest Michigan Invasive Species Network (ISN), and volunteers to carry out invasive species management benefitting dune and shoreline restoration.  This is a full-time, temporary position.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Implement control activities on the most aggressive invasives plant species with a primary focus on baby’s-breath (Gypsophila paniculata).
  • Work with large groups to remove invasive plant species at TNC, SLBE, and GTRLC sites.
  • Use aerial maps, GPS, and field notes to carry out and assist in tracking assigned work.
  • Assist with other management activities (such as equipment maintenance) as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE 

  • May interact with visitors.
  • Works under close or infrequent supervision.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.               
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.        
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 6 months of related experience     
Skills/Experience: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc).
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license).

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE

  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
