Federal Campaign Manager

NRDC is hiring two (2) politically experienced campaign managers to join the Federal Campaigns team in the Center for Policy Advocacy department in its Washington, DC office.  Reporting to the Deputy Directors of Federal Campaigns, the Federal Campaign Managers will develop and implement tactics to defend NRDC’s federal policy agenda from the Trump administration and Congress.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and implement federal campaign plans and budgets for advocacy and accountability initiatives in close collaboration with Program, Advocacy, and Communications partners and with regional and state-based teams.
  • Typically engage in 2-3 concurrent priority campaigns, including for the NRDC Action Fund.
  • Organize partnerships as needed with other organizations to achieve campaign objectives.
  • Organize campaign briefings and reports for internal and external interested parties.
  • Manage campaign consultants and vendors as assigned.
  • These positions do not have direct reports but there is a great deal of horizontal management required in the role.
  • Expect occasional out-of-state and in-DC travel (usually few days or events a month).
  • Expect occasional late night and weekend work with short notice.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor's degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • We are targeting 7-10 years of experience in politics and advocacy for both Federal Campaign Manager positions. Those with less than 7 years of experience will not be considered.  No exceptions.
  • Must have managed (i.e. congressional, coordinated) or served as a director on one or more major issue advocacy or statewide political campaign.
  • The ideal candidate is experienced in and adept as both an organizer and as a communication tactician. S/he should be experienced in and well-prepared to frame issues, use polling and other research to guide advocacy communications, and organize outreach to stakeholders and coalition partners.
  • Proven experience in managing internal processes, project teams and budgets.
  • Exceptional ability to analyze information, formulate plans, and convey them in writing and through oral presentations. A writing and presentation test may be requested of finalists.
  • Track record of cultivating high-level relationships with political, non-profit advocacy, and philanthropic leaders, with a well-established professional network in politics, government, and non-profit advocacy.
  • Ability to represent NRDC with maturity, judgment, and professionalism.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Professional exposure to energy and environmental issues is not required. We are looking for innovative, cutting edge campaign and public affairs professionals, first and foremost.
  • Some professional exposure to Congress is desirable but not required. We are not looking for a long-time congressional staffer or a legislative advocate with minimal campaign experience.  The dream candidate is instead a seasoned campaigner who might have a year or more of Hill or legislative advocacy experience.
