This position leads the Beyond Dirty Fuels of the Our Wild America Campaign (Wild). The Initiative focuses on protecting our climate, communities and special places from fossil fuel development. This leader oversees a significant budget that supports approximately twenty full-time staff equivalents across the organization, including at least one direct report and numerous campaign staff. This position implements our theory of change, designing and overseeing the execution of effective strategies to keep oil and gas in the ground and transition to a clean energy economy. This work is focused on building and supporting a diverse, grassroots movement to lead the transition away from fossil fuels, and requires coordinating between the Sierra Club’s various internal and external capacities. In addition, the director secures funding to support and expand the Initiative’s work.
- Collaborate with the Sierra Club Foundation, the Executive Office and the Office of Advancement to cultivate relationships with donors and foundations that expand the existing funding for the Beyond Dirty Fuels Initiative. Provide content for funders, supporters and relevant membership and online appeals.
- Serve as the strategic co-lead for the Wild Campaign’s Beyond Dirty Fuels Initiative and along with the volunteer co-lead, and oversee and implement our winning theory of change.
- Collaborate with Federal Policy, Organizing, Environmental Law Program, Digital Strategies, Sierra Club Outdoors, Communications, Chapters, and volunteers to protect lands, waters, and communities that are threatened by the extraction, processing, and transport of dirty fuels for domestic and international consumption.
- Lead the development and execution of strategies, plans and budgets to achieve the long term outcomes of the Beyond Dirty Fuels Initiative
- Supervise the Associate Director and the Campaign Representatives.
- Lead the Initiative team in advancing the Sierra Club's equity, inclusion, and justice goals to support frontline community efforts to move beyond dirty fuels.
- Serve as a national spokesperson for the Sierra Club’s Beyond Dirty Fuels Initiative to traditional and online media outlets. Represents the Sierra Club in national coalitions and with decision makers.
- 3-5 years' experience in a comparable position which includes substantial experience related to: leading effective teams, campaign strategy, fundraising, lobbying, media, working with volunteers, budget planning, and staff management.
- Expert knowledge within the advocacy and nonprofit field, which includes in-depth knowledge and background in energy and climate issues (preferred, though not required)planning and growing nonprofits, grant writing and implementing advocacy campaigns.
- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking, donor cultivation, and media presentation ability.
- Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
- Extensive travel required.
- Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
