he Chapter Director, implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee in coordination with national campaign and program staff working in Washington State.  Manages the chapter staff budget and operations of more than one of the following operational areas: conservation and legislative program, fundraising, volunteer development and member services, budgeting and financial management, and media relations.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Scope:

  • Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Executive Committee for the assigned areas of chapter programs and operations. 
  • Responsible for managing chapter staff and financial resources for the assigned areas, and for coordinating chapter work with nationally-funded work in the state.

Job Activities:

  • Assists the Executive Committee, and Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives. 
  • Plans and implements effective conservation and lobbying programs as assigned that reflect the chapter’s goals and priorities, and represents the Chapter to elected officials and the media.
  • Plans and implements an effective donor stewardship program, develops contacts with donors and foundation funders to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the chapter's credibility.
  • Designs and develops reporting systems to monitor the effectiveness of programs, as well as the status of the budget for assigned program areas. Responsible for reporting outcomes to the chapter supervisor.
  • Recruits and enables volunteer leaders in the planning and implementation of core chapter activities and communications, when this is an assigned program area.
  • Attends and facilitates meetings, task forces, and events.  Builds strong relationships with other groups, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc.  Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
  • Coordinates efforts with the national headquarters staff and ensures that the chapter strategies are in compliance with national requirements. 
  • Manages chapter staff and contractors in assigned operational or program areas.  Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate.  Ensures Chapter is in compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices.
  • Reviews staff time report and ensures the reporting of this information is accurate and timely in accordance with Sierra Club policies.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years’ leadership experience in a public-interest grassroots organization, including some experience with training and motivating volunteers, fundraising, coalition building and/or lobbying.
  • Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking ability.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteer leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness building relationships with pubic officials and/or financial donors.
  • Demonstrated interest in current environmental issues such as climate change and/or lands and water protection.
  • Basic experience and skill with spreadsheets, database systems, social media, and digital communication tools.
  • Experience with Washington State environmental issues and politics is preferred.
