Director of Operations

Brooklyn, NY, USA
Full-time

OVERVIEW OF NXU

nXu (short for nexus) is a non-profit initiative that provides research-based, transformative, purpose-driven learning experiences for youth and adults through a school-based curriculum, educator training and development, and direct student programming.  Through our model, we cultivate spaces to elevate joy and center our collective stories.  We dig deep to explore the unique set of joys, strengths, and values that intersect to drive each of us in a meaningful direction.  In doing so, we learn to see our identities as powerful and essential for charting fulfilling future pathways.

OVERVIEW OF ROLE

In the next five years, we at nXu hope to be the preeminent Social Emotional Learning provider nationwide with a 21st century approach to SEL development that integrates the fundamental constructs of identity, social-emotional wellness, social capital and career exploration.  nXu is focused on driving a paradigm shift and on generating a notable, lasting impact within the education space.  Rather than focus on a monolithic and generic goal of "college", we’re encouraging educators, policy makers, funders, and parents to consider anchoring each child's education most centrally to that individual child's identity & aspirations or--in the language of nXu--her/his/their purpose.

Over the past 18 months, interest in nXu’s curriculum has grown exponentially, and as an organization, we are broadly committed to increasing the scale & impact of our program.  As we look to the upcoming school year and our list of registered partners for our Purpose Opportunity Program (POP), our educator training and curriculum implementation model, the program will experience 175+% growth in number of partner organizations, 260+% growth in number of schools served, and over 600% growth in the number of educators supported.

We are seeking a full-time Director of Operations to, first and foremost, drive the development and implementation of a range of systems to manage our growth and to ensure continued operational excellence.  The Director of Operations will also provide ongoing operational management and oversight of POP as well as of our direct student & educator programming.  The ideal teammate will have a passion for and be adeptly skilled at designing, implementing and improving systems to support behind-the-scenes program operations geared towards fostering student and educator learning; a keen interest in autonomously solving operational puzzles with creative and inclusive solutions; and a desire to explore and identify new ways for nXu to more equitably and smoothly fulfill our mission.

This is a fast-paced and virtual role.  This person will report to Cat Lum, nXu’s Director of Programs and will work closely with Yutaka Tamura, Executive Director of nXu, and Jabali Sawicki, Compass Director at nXu.

    • Research and lead efforts to implement scalable partnership management systems to withstand the organization’s exponential growth.

About Us
Areas of Focus:
Mission:

nXu is a non-profit organization whose mission is to catalyze and equip youth and adults to explore, articulate, and pursue their purpose.

Programs:
  • Our Methodology: We have developed a research & evidence-based, 4-phase, purpose development methodology called “The Compass” that serves as our learning standards.
  • Our Products & Services: We offer a training program as well as our purpose development curriculum to schools, and we also directly implement programming with students both in school and out of school.
  • Our Target: Through our products and services, we have served high school students from over 50 district, charter, and private schools across the country.  We are seeking to partner with additional schools and organizations that are interested in fostering a sense of purpose among their students.
Why Work For Us?:

A sense of purpose acts as an inner compass that—when combined with skills training and community support—allows young people to live in alignment with their highest potential.  Thus, we have developed a research & evidence-based purpose development methodology and curriculum that we have implemented in-school and out-of-school with high school students in Chicago, Newark, New York, San Antonio and Seattle.  Through this direct programming, we have cultivated a deep understanding of the implementation needs of our purpose development program.  Leveraging these insights, we are establishing a teacher training program and school-based curriculum that will allow a growing number of high schools to cultivate a sense of purpose in the lives of their students.
