About Fresh Lifelines for Youth

Fresh Lifelines for Youth (FLY) is an award-winning nonprofit working to break the cycle of juvenile violence, crime, and incarceration. In twenty years of this work, FLY has supported tens of thousands of young people impacted by the justice system. FLY is at a critical juncture in our evolution: adding to a long history of success providing impactful intervention and prevention programs for young people, we understand that the pipeline-to-prison is a series of systems, structures and practices that suppress the ability of young people of color and other marginalized young people to thrive. We’ve set an audacious goal to do something about it: by 2030, through partnering with young people, communities, and systems, FLY will contribute to the fight for equity and justice by taking concrete steps to dismantle California’s pipeline to prison, equip 30,000 juvenile-justice and at-risk youth to transform their lives, and strengthen services for marginalized youth in California and beyond. More info at: www.flyprogram.org.

STAY FLY Program Summary: The STAY FLY Program builds agency and self-advocacy in young adults to decrease justice system involvement and successfully transition back into their communities.

Program Components:

  • STAY FLY Workshops. Interactive legal education curriculum, including weekly two-hour sessions and key experiential components that provide:
    • Self-awareness: Participants will be able to recognize and take ownership of underlying emotions and identify constructive ways to react and integrate them into their lives.
    • Social awareness: Participants will develop the knowledge and capacities to display empathy and sensitivity and build relationships with individuals who are different than them.
    • Critical problem solving: Participants will be able to weigh and apply evidence when addressing problems and challenges in a thoughtful manner.
    • Self-advocacy: Participants will be able to view themselves in the context of larger systems and take action on behalf of themselves, peers, and larger community.
  • Case Management & Coaching. Case Management begins at the referral process through the Probation Department and continues in the community for a minimum length of 1 year in STAY FLY programming. The Case Manager continues to build on the skills built in the law workshops as they coach the young adult to practice the skills in the community.
  • System Collaboration. FLY is the Community Based Organization (CBO) representative at the Young Adult Deferred Entry of Judgment (YADEJ) Steering Committee and any other external YADEJ meetings on an as needed basis
  • Pro-Social Activities. Activities for young adults who are re-integrating into their communities to build pro-social engagement skills.
