AARP has an immediate need for a Community Outreach Intern in Wichita, Kansas.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Intern will have the opportunity to see the real world of advocating for change, empowering volunteers to be leaders and working collectively as a team. Key responsibilities of the intern are to:

  • Work with the Associate State Director for Community Outreach and the State Director in supporting state plan activities including volunteer recruitment, community engagement and member events;
  • Develop in-depth knowledge and compile information on AARP priority issues;
  • Help arrange and coordinate speaking engagements, assist volunteers with logistics and planning as needed; track results of their speaking engagements; compile and send a regular email update to volunteers;
  • Assist with state office communications via social media and the web. Prepare blogs for the web page and posts for Facebook and Twitter;
  • Work closely with AARP staff and volunteers in providing support for State Plan events;
  • Assist with event planning and management;
  • Other duties as assigned.

In order to be successful in this role, the Intern must be able to:

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of issues; gather information and research topics; practice developing presentations and talking points;
  • Assist in volunteer coordination and will have a major role in assigning and coordinating work with volunteers. He/she will be heavily engaged with volunteers involved at AARP events and interacting with members and public at public forums;
  • Interact with most frequently: all volunteers across Kansas and potential sites for speaking engagements and have some interaction with public/members that may be seeking information on AARP;
  • Perform tasks that are explained in advance with an opportunity for hands on instruction when needed;
  • Work on assorted projects that are scheduled throughout the year with an opportunity for the intern to experience many different aspects of work ranging from meetings, listening sessions, public events, varied communication with volunteers/members, and event preparation;
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors.  
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience using social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube, computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and online search tools,
  • Able to multi-task and work independently, as well as collaboratively.
  • Able to work well with volunteers and diverse populations;
  • Awareness of online practices that affect issues such as: privacy, confidentiality, liability, standards, ethics, safety, human rights, etc;
  • Commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP.
