The Department of Portfolio Growth & Performance (PGP) Proposal Pricing Intern assists the team in creating and improving the US Government (USG) proposal development budgeting tools, templates, and other informational resources. The intern will be provided with an introduction to SCUS USG cost proposal development, and mentorship into the more nuanced aspects of the process. The intern will gain skills and experience in complex budget and word template creation, USG rules and regulations and business processes related to proposal development. Through this work, the intern will gain broad exposure to the work of an international development non-profit organization.

As an intern or skilled volunteer, you will have the opportunity to network with other Save the Children interns, volunteers and employees and participate in learning sessions about various topics spanning the breadth of Save the Children's work. Through this experience, you will gain a greater understanding about how the international development community intersects with the private sector. You will also gain transferable skills that are applicable to a variety of roles, particularly in the non-profit industry, marketing, sales, and client services.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Strategize and perform critical enhancements to the main budgeting template used for cost proposals. This template is a macro/VBA driven Excel file with extensive relational and automated aspects. The focus of this project will be on both back-end and user experience. Requirements will be provided to intern. 
  • Create and execute enhancements to lower-complexity Excel and Word templates, such as fillable forms, trackers, datasheets. The focus is also on streamlining and automating user experience, with lower complexity/basic use of macros and VBA coding.
  • Produce guidance and maintenance instructions documents as appropriate for revisions to tools and templates.
  • Assist with routine maintenance/error correction of tools and templates (fixing bugs, updating with new standard language or data, etc.)
  • Provide proposal pricing management support as needed (researching, attending and capturing notes in relevant meetings, etc.)
  • Assist with inventory and maintenance of internal and intranet-based file libraries
  • Develop a system/inventory for cataloging frequently asked questions and responses submitted to donors.
  • Weekly touch-base with supervisor to discuss internship goals, project timelines, progress, and determine other informational interviews, projects, etc. that would be conducive to continuing intern development
  • Create objectives for internship and measure progress against them.
  • Attend various learning opportunities offered through the SCUS Intern, Fellow and Volunteer program, as well as directly with the PGP team.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related fields of information technology, computer science, and/or other fields related to international development or a projected graduation date.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, databases).
  • Ability to create and write macros and VBA coding in Excel and Word. 
  • Experience in communications and information technology systems.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and ensure timely completion of assignments.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environment and workload.
  • Experience in data management and visualization.
  • Experience working in SharePoint.
  • Must be eligible to intern or volunteer in the U.S.
  • To be classified as an intern: an individual must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate academic program and able to receive some level of credit from his/her college or institution. (Minimum requirement is a letter of support and documentation is required only after an internship is offered.)
  • Any individual who is not a student or able to receive credit may apply for an internship, but will be classified as a skilled volunteer, not as an intern.
