The humanitarian communications intern will play an important role within the communications team this summer, assisting the director of communications for humanitarian response and emergencies with daily activities, planned media campaigns and responses to breaking emergencies.
The intern will conduct research to support outreach to US journalists that earns media coverage for Save the Children’s programs, messages and experts in reporting on global children’s crises. The team’s portfolio includes natural and man-made breaking emergencies and protracted humanitarian crises such as the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, the Rohingya refugee crisis and the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This summer, the humanitarian communications intern will also assist in the advance planning for World Humanitarian Day and the United Nations General Assembly. The intern will have the opportunity to attend meetings and talks by operations and programming staff within Save the Children.
As an intern or skilled volunteer, you will have the opportunity to network with other Save the Children interns, volunteers and employees and participate in learning sessions about various topics spanning the breadth of Save the Children's work. Through this experience, you will gain a greater understanding about how the international development community intersects with the private sector. You will also gain transferable skills that are applicable to a variety of roles, particularly in the non-profit industry, marketing, sales, and client services.
- Media analysis around global health, conflict, refugees and other emergency topics.
- Identify new US media outlets and journalists for outreach around humanitarian issues.
- Attend think tank events and preparing short summaries for communications team.
- Edit contact lists to help facilitate top tier media coverage.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Interest in working on a communications team and in conducting media research.
- Interest in journalism, global current events and humanitarian response programs.
- Proactive team player with a friendly, can-do attitude.
- Interest in Save the Children's work and mission.
- Knowledge of Cision/Vocus database preferred but not required.
- Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
- To be classified as an intern: (Minimum requirement is a letter of support and documentation is required only after an internship offer is accepted.)
- An individual who is not enrolled as a student or able to receive credit from their institution may apply to an internship, however will be classified as a skilled volunteer, not as an intern.
