Summer Early Childhood Development and Gender Intern

The Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) team developed a Gender Equality Toolkit for Early Childhood Education teachers, which will be piloted in the Philippines in second half of 2019. The toolkit includes training materials to be used with preschool and kindergarten teachers, and an observation checklist to assess the impact of the training on teachers’ beliefs, knowledge and behaviors in class with regard to gender equality.

The Early Childhood Development and Gender intern will mainly be responsible to research and summarize existing literature and available qualitative research tools that aim at assessing the impact of gender transformative approaches in class from the perspective of teachers and young children aged 3 to 6. This will inform and support the future work of the ECD team.

S/he will also support the dissemination of the current Gender Equality for ECE project by reviewing and drafting working documents, identifying opportunities and organizing events to share finding and lessons learned with internal and external networks. Lastly, the intern will be able to support with other priority topics of research and learning in the ECCD team according to their interests and skills.

As an intern or skilled volunteer, you will have the opportunity to network with other Save the Children interns, volunteers and employees and participate in learning sessions about various topics spanning the breadth of Save the Children's work. Through this experience, you will gain a greater understanding about how the international development community intersects with the private sector. You will also gain transferable skills that are applicable to a variety of roles, particularly in the non-profit industry, marketing, sales, and client services.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conduct desk research on qualitative research and research tools used with teachers and children (3-6) to assess impact of gender equality activities in schools
  • Review and help finalize working documents e.g. guidelines and short mid-year report
  • Research and develop list of opportunities (e.g. conferences) to disseminate work on Gender Equality and ECD with external networks
  • Plan and organize webinars and/or brown bags events for the Fall to share about Gender Equality and ECD project with internal network
  • Provide support to on-going ECCD tasks
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree or current graduate student preferably in research, early childhood development, gender studies, or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • SharePoint 2010 experience preferred
  • Knowledge of Early Childhood Education and experience working in the early years, preferably in low and middle income countries
  • Possess strong written skills, solid interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • To be classified as an intern: an individual must be enrolled in a relevant undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate academic program and able to receive some level of credit from his/her college or institution. (Minimum requirement is a letter of support and documentation is required only after an internship offer is accepted.)
  • An individual who is not enrolled as a student or able to receive credit from their institution may apply to an internship, however will be classified as a skilled volunte
