Responsible for creating content for AARP digital, print and other platforms to support the production of an outstanding and authoritative website, print publications, apps, videos and more. In addition, the Senior Staff Writer/Editor/Producer is responsible for writing speeches, developing talking points, op-eds, and other content for use by executives, board members, and in support of broad communications that reflect the views and priorities of the organization. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Conceives, writes, edits, produces and contributes news, feature and related content on subjects of interest to the AARP demographic for use on digital, print and other platforms.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of a wide variety of subjects important to the AARP demographic.
  • Assigns content for multiple platforms to internal and external contributors and monitors workflow as needed.
  • Skillfully edits and shapes content for appropriate platforms.
  • Stays up-to-date in one or more areas of assigned content expertise, such as health and medicine, personal finance and retirement.
  • Maintains contacts with talented freelancers, subject matter experts, and opinion leaders who can contribute to a variety of platforms and utilizes those contacts effectively to solicit robust and authoritative content.
  • Keeps abreast of changing best practices within digital and emerging platforms. 
  • Collaborates with enterprise-wide colleagues to develop unique story ideas to cover the broad range of AARP programs, initiatives and activities.
  • Constantly offers imaginative and insightful ideas for content development.
  • Performs other editorial duties as needed.
  • Develops and maintains deep knowledge of AARP and its priorities, social mission and goals.
  • Writes speeches and talking points expressing AARP views, priorities and positions for executive team, board members, and other representatives of AARP.
  • Creates content highlighting AARP views, priorities and positions for enterprise-wide communications.
  • Writes or edits news and features expressing AARP views, priorities, and positions for AARP digital platforms and various publications.
  • Writes op-eds and other content for various external digital and print platforms.
  • Demonstrates AARP’s mission, purpose and value in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree in Journalism, English, or Communications.  Masters’ degree desirable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 7+ years of experience in journalism and/or speechwriting.
  • Great knowledge of AARP organization, priorities and history.
  • Demonstrated excellence in speechwriting skills and journalistic skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively, closely and effectively with executive team and board members.
  • Has extensive internal and external networking capabilities and contacts.
  • Demonstrated ability to write about complex subjects in effective and appealing ways.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle appropriate work load efficiently and effectively and manage assignments, meet deadlines and contribute creative ideas.
