The Senior Specialist, Child Protection in Emergencies will provide thought leadership, technical support, and capacity building across humanitarian sectors as part of the Child Protection in Emergencies Team and the Humanitarian Response Team. This will include contributing to strategic directions and plans, developing and maintaining key external partnerships, and maintaining links with other departments to strengthen and expand our child focused humanitarian response for children.
Areas of Responsibility:
Technical Assistance (50%)
In collaboration with the Child Protection Team, Humanitarian Business Team, Gender and Social Inclusion Community of Practice, regional and country offices:
- Provide technical assistance to regional and country offices in formulation of program and country child protection strategies with special focus on gender mainstreaming and sexual and gender based violence prevention and response
- Provide gender analysis, design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation support to regional, and country offices
- Build capacity of humanitarian business team, country offices and other sector staff in child protection and gender mainstreaming, GBV mitigation and response in emergencies
- Support cross-organizational child protection and gender equality initiatives
- Support quality program design and implementation for child protection programming from public and private funding streams, including foundations, private donors and key bilateral donors, such as USAID OFDA, DOS BPRM and UNHCR
- Lead the design and implementation of child protection and gender analysis and integrate findings into program design and Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL).
- Work with and support MEAL teams in developing context-specific indicators to measure gender and protection outcomes.
Program learning and internal/external representation (35%)
- Monitor new developments in GBV & Gender in emergencies and support SC to apply best practices
- Represent on external and internal bodies of key importance to Save the Children related to Child Protection, including GBV & Gender.
- Liaise with key partner agencies and donors
- Provide thought leadership around child protection and gender programming innovation in the humanitarian context
- Support development and implementation of the child protection learning agenda, focusing on GBV & Gender programming in humanitarian contexts
- Support regional and country offices to develop case studies, reports, and other multi-media documentation of program innovation and successes
Public and Private Resource Mobilization (15%)
- Support child protection and humanitarian response teams to build a diversified portfolio of funding focused on GBV and gender in emergencies
- Establish/maintain new/existing relationships with key donors (headquarters and regional/country level) and relevant SC colleagues.
- Contribute to agency knowledge and decision-making concerning pursuit of funding opportunities.
- Support development and submission of quality proposals in response to identified opportunities.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience:
- You have a minimum 5-7 years' experience in area of child protection and/or international development
- Professional level of technical or managerial knowledge, skills, and experience to manage the operational activities of a unit or team, or provide the technical and management support related to various size programs, grants or projects.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately 40% of the time (some on short notice (72 hours) and for extended periods of up to six weeks), often to complex and difficult environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in social work, gender studies, child protection, or related field or equivalent experience and at least 5-7 years gender equality, child protection and/or GBV in emergencies experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of key child protection, gender equality and GBV in emergency issues
- Experience providing technical support and oversight to child protection programs.
- Previous onset emergency response experience is preferred
- Experience (5 years) of humanitarian contexts including in a range of different emergencies, particularly slow-onset, rapid onset and protracted conflict emergency responses, including remote management/restricted access;
- Experience in program design and proposal development for private foundations, bi- and/or multilaterals, and/or USAID and Department of State-particularly BPRM and OFDA;
- Experience conducting assessments - including gender analysis - and revising monitoring and evaluation tools to capture gender and protection considerations for different sectors;
- Ability to work and think globally and develop diverse relationships with colleagues and counterparts.
- Commitment to and understanding of gender equality, child rights, the aims and principles of SC, and humanitarian standards such as the Sphere Charter and the IASC Guidelines.

- Fluent written and spoken English;
