Reporting to the Director and Executive Producer-Spanish, this Sr Editor is a key experienced editor who, with the Executive Producer, helps to shape and lead the development of content and materials for the Spanish-preferred, 50+ U.S. Latino audience. As such, this position is critical in supporting Multicultural and Membership goals—including brand awareness, familiarity, and increased Joins and Renews.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Attends daily, weekly and/or monthly meetings as needed, for both Spanish and cross-platform, as well as developing a close working relationship within ICM and other department teams, including English Content teams, Strat directors, Social Media, Campaigns, Multicultural Leadership and other Business Units that wish to publish content in Spanish.
  • Keeps abreast of issues relevant to people 50-plus, particularly Hispanics.
  • Uses knowledge of 50+ Hispanic population to develop editorial and multimedia content ideas, especially on digital, social and mobile platforms.
  • Contributes original content ideas, and proposes staffing and content solutions directly to the Director/Executive Producer- Spanish.
  • Ensures that all content reflects AARP’s social mission initiatives and policy positions.
  • Writes articles, blogs and other editorial content; top edits, rewrites and creates headlines and captions in Spanish.
  • Works directly with the Translations Services team to produce culturally appropriate and engaging Spanish-language translations and transcreations of original English editorial content.
  • Works directly with each Spanish website channel editor to develop a robust mix of translated and original content for that channel, and set metrics and goals for each channel.
  • Keeps a detailed content calendar and production schedule of content assigned per channel, per week/month/year, including original and translated content from print, web, Studios and other sources; works with other team members to keep the editorial workflow on track.
  • Programs the home page daily.
  • Works closely with the analytics and SEO leads to keep abreast of what is working or trending on the site and online in general, for the target audience.
  • Works closely with DSM teams, web producers and channel editors to ensure good SEO and SEM practices.
  • Understands and keeps up with the evolution of digital platforms primarily, and other emerging communication channels, i.e. voice, social media, and other media.
  • May represent the organization, as needed, for radio and television interviews in Spanish and English. May participate in conferences and events as needed to speak about health, finance and other topics related to Hispanics.
  • Serves as backup for the Director/Executive Producer–Spanish as needed  to make decisions in a fast-paced environment that directly influence traffic and engagement on the site, and therefore organizational and multicultural priorities.
  • Acts on the Director/Executive Producer-Spanish’s behalf as necessary, including representing the Director/Executive Producer-Spanish at cross-functional and senior-level meetings, and approving invoices.
  • Demonstrates leadership in all areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, Digital Communications, or similar major field
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 10 to 15 years of experience, most of which must have been in a digital and consumer-facing environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish, with exceptionally strong spoken and written language and editing skills in Spanish and a deep understanding of Hispanic culture and the U.S. Hispanic population.
  • Proven ability to manage projects and people.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, people-management, judgment, team-building and negotiation skills.
  • Significant experience in planning, scheduling, and enforcing compliance with complex editorial production systems, in the production of daily journalism.
  • Experience in using web-publishing tools (including CMS, blogs, and editorial process and task management tools) and social media platforms; strong attention to detail.
  • Certification or training in SEO, Web Analytics, Social Media or e-Tablet Publishing a major plus.
