Provides legal assistance to clients of the Public Benefits and General Services Unit with estate planning and probate matters.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Under the direction of the supervisor, provides direct representation to older DC residents in cases involving estate planning, including wills, powers of attorney, and transfer on death deeds, and probate, small and large estates, and deed title transfers. Conducts client interviews, gathers pertinent records, and prepare legal forms and documents.
- Obtains and files documents with the D.C. Superior Court, Probate Division and the Office of Recorder of Deeds.
- Effectively administers assigned cases and ensures that client problems are identified and resolved promptly, efficiently, and in an organized manner.
- Prepares educational materials, grant reports, trainings, and participates in community outreach as assigned.
- Maintains accurate, contemporaneous, and complete records and notes in the case management system concerning cases handled.
- Conducts legal research and writes memoranda as required and assists in the creation of a practice manual for probate cases.
- Attends training courses and participates in webinars as identified by the supervisor.
- Possesses a demonstrated interest in public interest law, particularly estate planning and probate, and works well with low-income seniors.
Educational Background:
Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree
