Context: Assists in the planning, organizing and coordination of the activities in carrying out all aspects of Labor & Economic Justice Program (LEJP) and Healthy Communities (HC).

The Labor & Economic Justice Program (LEJP) and Healthy Communities (HC) address a wide range of issues aimed at ensuring that the transition from fossil fuels delivers on the potential for the clean energy economy to create millions of good, family supporting jobs.

Scope: The Labor and Economic Justice Intern works with the Labor & Economic Justice Program and Healthy Communities staff as well as Communications, Organizing, Digital, chapter staff and volunteers to design both national and localized strategies and campaigns to constructively engage the labor and economic justice communities to help ensure that the transition to a clean energy economy and phase out of coal creates sustainable union jobs and strengthens local economies and communities. Works with appropriate staff to integrate the goals and objectives of the Sierra Club's Labor & Economic Justice Program and Healthy Communities (HC)

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assists in the development and conduction programs, initiatives and campaigns in coordination with the other Sierra Club campaigns, programs , the Labor & Economic Justice Program and Healthy Communities. Works with national staff and volunteers, as well as regional and chapter staff and volunteers in assisting in the development and carrying out program/campaign plans, using the Sierra Club organizing model.
  • Assists in the development of relationships with national and local allies and stakeholders within the labor community, and seeks to advance these relationships along a continuum towards coordinated joint action.
  • Assists in the development of educational and campaign/program issues information. This may include the writing, editing and distribution of webinars, fact sheets, newsletters, and educational materials. It may also include the writing, editing and reviewing of articles for conservation-related publications.
  • Assists in the coordination of all activities with Labor and Coal Coordinator, ensuring collaboration, consistent messaging, and alignment of strategy with Sierra Club campaigns, programs Labor & Economic Justice Program and Health Communities goals.
  • Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/ campaign. Provides conservation and labor training to volunteers.
  • Represents the Sierra Club to the general public, media or to outside officials. Conducts media outreach activities related to the campaign/program, including developing media outreach plans, serving as Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets, and promotes volunteer media exposure.
  • Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staffs. Develops and conducts lobby campaigns associated with the Labor & Economic Justice Program and Healthy Communities.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Educational Background: 
It is encouraged but not required for prospective interns to be pursuing or have already graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  High-school diploma or GED required. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Interest in US labor movement, including issue specific areas such as workforce development, labor rights, unions, collective bargaining rights, organizing, and economic development.
  • Knowledge of environmental advocacy and/or national politics preferred
  • Ability to apply discretion and understand the importance of organizational confidentiality
  • Ability to work cooperatively and interact effectively with staff, volunteers, the public and others outside the organization
  • Ability to meet quick deadlines and prioritize multiple projects
  • Comfort with engaging in issue advocacy and targeted accountability
Compensation/Benefits: 

Sierra Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Sierra Club employees are not eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.  Sierra Club does not sponsor H1B visas.
