The Office of Government Relations and Advocacy (GRA) leads Habitat’s efforts to advocate for systems, policies and attitudes that advance adequate, affordable housing around the world. Based in Washington, D.C., the GRA team builds the organization’s advocacy capacity by providing the global Habitat network with strategic direction and support to effect change and allow Habitat to serve more families. Additionally, the GRA team maintains relationships with members of Congress, government agencies, non-profits, international organizations, and other policymakers in Washington, D.C. and around the world to inform, advocate, educate, and provide linkages to the field.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • As the U.S. Advocacy Campaign Intern, you will support Habitat’s first-ever U.S. based advocacy campaign, Cost of Home, to improve home affordability for 10 million people through policy and systems change at the local, state and federal levels. This position will have the opportunity to help Habitat affiliates across the nation build their capacity to engage in advocacy and policy change. You will work on a wide array of projects related to Habitat’s U.S. advocacy campaign and U.S. policy work. You will also gain hands-on experience in communications, mobilization and the creation of tools to support housing policy solutions.
  • Additionally, as the organization prepares to host our annual legislative conference, Habitat on the Hill, you will have the opportunity to assist Habitat’s Government Relations and Advocacy (GRA) office in planning.
  • This position will give you a chance to contribute to a top-notch non-profit organization and develop advocacy specialties that will increase your professional growth.
  • This position is based at our Government Relations and Advocacy office, located in Washington, D.C.
  • This position is 3-5 days/week, unpaid internship from August--December, with the option to stay on for longer.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Government Relations & Advocacy team around the communication, outreach, and mobilization efforts related to the U.S. advocacy campaign.
  • Track enrollment of U.S. Habitat affiliates in the campaign.
  • Support development of website and app for annual legislative conference, Habitat on the Hill.
  • Provide logistical support to planning of Habitat on the Hill.
  • Input and edit content for Habitat on the Hill tech platforms
  • Support U.S. Habitat affiliate involvement in the campaign by developing materials and building their advocacy capacity through effective trainings.
  • Develop tools to ensure the Habitat network and general public both meaningfully engage in the U.S. advocacy campaign.
  • Assist with maintaining communication channels about the U.S. campaign, including social media.
  • At the end of the internship, you will learn and be exposed to the role that an advocacy campaign can play in advancing the policy priorities of a well-known nonprofit organization. You will also learn how to work in a professional environment, and have ample opportunity to work with advocacy and policy experts in our office and the field. Throughout your internship, you will have the opportunity to see and help develop advocacy at several levels of government, including local, state, and federal. In addition to current projects in the office, your supervisor will work with you to develop a project that you can “own” and develop during the course of your internship.
Educational Background: 
Current undergraduate student
Skills/Experience: 
  • Exceptionally strong communications skills; must be able to easily communicate with Habitat affiliates across the country
  • Strong writing and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to take on individual projects as well as work in a team
  • Comfort with research and analysis
  • Great organizational skills and the ability to juggle varied tasks while meeting deadlines
  • Consistent attention to detail
  • Microsoft Office savvy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with web design
  • Basic web-design experience
  • Strong enthusiasm for social justice
  • Interest in affordable housing issues
