The AARP State Office of DC is seeking an assertive student with excellent writing skills, communications experience and who enjoys a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment to join its. The intern's work will include assisting the District of Columbia State Office with State branding through writing, editing, event planning, fielding and directing media calls, proactive media relations, developing media materials, and crisis communications. The intern must be available to work 25 hours per week, May 2019 through December, 2019.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The intern will report to the District of Columbia State Director and contribute as a team member, participating in all Team meetings. The intern will be responsible for researching, interviewing, editing original and existing materials, and having direct contact with Members and direct-service providers. The intern will be responsible for researching and developing a campaign and its execution, that highlights the stories of people 50+ impacted by a select issue the District of Columbia State Office is working on in 2018. The intern will also assist with creating and maintaining the State’s Facebook page and contributing to Twitter content.

Sample specific projects and duties include:

  • Prepare and assist communications for all State-led engagements.
  • Develop Caregiving promotions targeting Veterans and Millennial Caregivers, respectively.
  • Provide E-newsletter content – that fits template requirement & links to AARP DC blog.
  • Create and schedule social media posts – pre-event/during/post content.
  • Work with Assistant State Director- Communications to identify posts for paid promotion.
  • Manage Facebook Live during events.
  • Create at least 3 original videos with content that supports work outlined in state plan.
  • Draft 3 blog posts (1/month) for the AARP DC blog.
  • Create and schedule fun social media posts for each month – connected to the enterprise themes.
Educational Background: 
Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; be in good academic standing; and be considered rising undergraduate juniors or seniors. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. 
  • This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Internships are non-exempt positions and are not eligible for employee benefits.
