Audubon’s coastal program is offering university credit for this internship opportunity in Washington, DC, for an individual interested in coastal resilience and marine conservation policy. The intern will work on various research, outreach, and creative projects to advance our coastal program’s goals, which include education, outreach, and influencing decision makers.

Areas of Responsibility: 

This intern will contribute to the goals of the coastal program in a variety of ways, with many opportunities to dive deeper into projects based on interest and needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Gather and analyze information about priority policy issues, 
  • Prepare briefing materials and develop public presentation skills, 
  • Conduct policy research and track bills moving through Congress and policy and regulatory issues moving through the Administration, 
  • Write letters to support, improve, or oppose policies moving through Congress or the Administration, 
  • Attend congressional hearings, and accompany Audubon policy staff on visits to congressional offices, 
  • Represent Audubon with other environmental groups and participate in coalition activities, 
  • Gain exposure to Audubon’s grassroots outreach programs and methodology, and
  • Plan engagement events for Members of Congress. 

This full-time internship will take place during the fall semester or quarter (September through December) and goes toward university class credit.

Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in political science, marine biology or science, conservation biology, climate change, environmental studies, social sciences, communications and/or social change preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; well organized.
  • Strong work ethic with exceptional organizational skills and an eye for details.
  • Adaptable and versatile; able to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.
  • Experience or a willing to learn InDesign or other creative software.
  • Genuine interest in conservation, the mission of the National Audubon Society, and social and environmental justice.
  • Having speaking proficiency in Spanish or another language other than English is a bonus.
  • Understanding of GIS or other mapping software a bonus.
  • People of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
