Context: Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is the largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the country, with more than 3.5 million members and supporters. The Sierra Club helped establish and expand national parks like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, and pushed to define landmark legislation like the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.

Today the Sierra Club has 63 chapters nationwide in all 50 states, with dozens of active local and national campaigns.  Our work has proven highly successful, from helping to retire 267 coal plants to restoring wetlands destroyed by the BP oil spill.  Today’s environment faces a new set of complex challenges with imminent and dangerous consequences on a global scale, but the solutions are at our fingertips. Climate recovery, clean energy and equity/justice are a major feature of the work ahead.

Scope:  To assist the Sierra Club’s Advancement Department in fundraising and donor cultivation efforts throughout the United States. Interns will be assisting a team of gift officers across the country with donor and foundation research, database management, and event planning.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Learn and utilize organizational databases for donor identification, solicitation and profiling
  • Prepare guidance documents and information sheets for gift officer meetings and follow up
  • Participate in and assist in the planning of National Sierra Club and Chapter events
  • Support the Club’s local campaigns and advocacy efforts in the DC metro area
  • Work independently to identify foundation and individual prospects in targeted regions

  • Maintains confidentiality with sensitive financial and personal information
  • Ability to write and pitch engaging donor emails, meeting requests and event invitations
  • Ability to collaborate and work as part of a team and bring their all every day
  • Passion for conservation, and who cares deeply about environmental and social justice
  • Ability to identify and lead particular projects with consultation from staff
Compensation/Benefits: 

Sierra Club is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization. Sierra Club employees are not eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.  Sierra Club does not sponsor H1B visas.
