The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the leader of the organization, establishing a vision and plan for community results that are achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff and volunteers.  The CEO must be a person who can attract significant resources to our community agenda including funding from corporate relationships, major individual gifts, foundation investments, and government grants and matching funds. The CEO is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling and leveraging strategies for broad investment and results.  The CEO is the steward of the brand and understands his/her role in growing and protecting the reputation of United Way.  He/she is responsible for building trust in United Way and its relevance in the community and is a highly visible and effective spokesperson for the United Way within the community.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Resource Development - The CEO is charged to drive key results in fundraising: to identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors and key leaders of prospective new corporate partners and foundations, to leverage personal and professional contacts and relationships into transformational fundraising opportunities; and to promote a culture of growth in the organization, both at the staff and board level.
  • Highly Visible and Effective Community Leader - The CEO is out front every day representing the United Way in a manner which creates the leadership image the organization desires to have. The CEO is an exceptional leader and communicator and forms important partnerships throughout all relevant sectors and organizations within the community.
  • Community Results - The CEO is responsible for the overall results of United Way Suncoast in the community.  The CEO works closely with the Executive Team and Board of Directors to craft and adapt the strategy to achieve important results, including raising the funds to support it.  He/she will establish and build relationships with top leaders in the community, including those representing the highest levels in business, government and non-profit sectors.
  • Strategic Management – The CEO serves as the principal resource to the Board of Directors and gives strong direction in policy formulation and interpretation.  He/she partners with the Board of Directors and the United Way Suncoast Senior Leadership Team to craft organizational goals and develop strategies to ensure that they are achieved.  He/she ensures coordination and alignment of all United Way activities to strategic direction in the areas of community impact, resource development, and staff alignment.  The CEO is expected to have the vision required to steer the United Way Suncoast’s course into the future and the visionary ideas to move the organization forward, defining organizational strategies and working plans. The role has expanded to include formalizing the company’s strategic-planning processes, forging new, innovative fund development strategies and leveraging synergies across the United Way Worldwide organization to advance the mission.
  • Organization Management – The CEO is accountable for building and leading a high-performing Senior Leadership Team. The CEO will set the tone and establish the culture of the organization as one which is dedicated to its mission, maintains the highest level of integrity, and is strongly oriented to delivering important and measurable results in the community. Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree required; Master’s Degree desirable but not required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A proven track record in successfully growing revenue and increasing transformational philanthropic support.
  • Substantial experience working in the nonprofit sector.  Alternatively, extensive experience in the leadership and management of organizations of comparable size and mission.
  • Demonstrates exceptional leadership and communications skills – a visionary leader and communicator.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of intelligence and intellectual curiosity and a desire to explore new ideas and innovative approaches to solving problems.
  • Demonstrated track record of building relationships with the community at large and promoting diversity.

  • He/she has unquestioned integrity; a long term perspective; a strong sense of accountability; a practical ability to get things done; wisdom and good judgment; a fair and thoughtful approach to management, combined with the flexibility and courage to shift direction and experiment with new initiatives; a high energy level and sense of humor.
  • Training, experience or advanced degree preferred in fundraising, marketing/sales, business, public administration, or social services desired. 
  • Must have at least ten years of experience at executive leadership and management level in the for-profit or not-for-profit sector, ideally including professional or volunteer leadership within the health and human services field.
