The Executive Director is responsible for the organizations consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives. Other key responsibilities include fundraising, marketing and development, public relations, and the development of key relationships with members, strategic partners, and the community.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Board Governance:

  • Works with board in order to fulfill the affiliate mission.
  • Leads the affiliate in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Works with the Board of Directors to assure that the organization has a long-range strategic plan to achieve its mission, and that progress toward that mission is consistent and timely.
  • Keeps the Board fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it and ensures the Board has all the information necessary to function properly and make informed decisions.
  • Carries out the decisions and directives of the Board of Directors.
  • Works with the Board of Directors to recruit and nominate new board members.
  • Works with the Board President in arranging for Board Meetings and retreats.

Financial Performance and Viability:

  • Develops resources and maintains sound financial practices.
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the affiliate. This includes the timely submission of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, (to the Board) which accurately reflects the financial condition of the organization.
  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support Habitat’s mission.
  • Works with Staff, Finance Committee, and the Board in preparing a budget; sees that the affiliate operates within the budget. Communicates deviations to the Board and revises the budget when significant deviations need to be accounted for.

Administration

  • Ensure an effective Leadership Team is in place.
  • Maintain a culture which attracts, retains, and inspires a diverse staff of top quality people.
  • Provide leadership in developing programs, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff.
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Pays attention to emerging issues in the field through active participation in conferences and continuing education.
  • Represent the affiliate and its programs to agencies, organizations, and the general public.

Program Development

  • Work with staff and the Board of Directors to develop, implement and evaluate programs to ensure quality service and consistency with mission, goals and objectives.
  • Support staff development and education relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
  • Ensure programs evolve and are flexible to meet the different needs of the volunteer base.
  • Partner with a variety of groups (e.g. business, agencies, schools, the faith community) to procure funds and In-Kind giving.
  • Develop the appropriate / various volunteer groups to match the level of expertise required to fulfill the work at hand while ensuring volunteers have a valuable work experience.

Marketing/Development

  • Lead the Development Team in the creation and execution of the fundraising / grant writing plan for the acquisition of financial support from government, individuals, foundations and corporations.
  • Enhance the WLSHFH profile throughout the Twin Ports and surrounding geographic service area by developing and implementing an outreach and communications plan.
  • Work with the Board of Directors in the development and maintenance of ongoing relationships with major donors.
  • Work with the Development Team and Board of Directors to publicize the activities of the organization, its programs and goals.
  • Represents the Affiliate at community functions, act as a spokesperson to the media, professional organizations, and the general public.
  • Establish and maintain strong and sound working relationships and cooperative/collegial arrangements with community groups and organizations.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership.
  • Five or more years senior nonprofit management experience.
  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors.
  • High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers and donors.
  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers and the overall community.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff.
  • A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
  • Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.
  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.
  • Solid organizational abilities; including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong public speaking ability.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
