Chicken Soup Brigade (CSB) is Lifelong’s food, meal, and nutrition program provides medically tailored meals, healthy groceries, and nutrition education to people living with HIV and other chronic health conditions.  Currently serving over 2,000 clients annually through 200,000 meals and 35,000 grocery bags along with nutrition counseling and classes, CSB is poised for growth,  looking to broaden its client base and feed more people in need.

The Director performs work of a professional nature, including supervising both management and kitchen staff and performs advanced and complex program development tasks.  The work requires the ability to coordinate and clearly communicate both orally and in writing, develop and administer multiple-funded program budgets and to read, interpret, and apply complex written materials.  Considerable judgment is required in resolving personnel issues, in developing new program proposals and to solve operational and contract administration problems. This role will develop and implement strategies for growth and expanding program offerings. The CSB data system will be upgraded this year, understanding of system processes and an ability to communicate system requirements will be helpful.

This position is part of Lifelong’s Leadership Team and reports to the Deputy Executive Director. This is a full-time exempt, non-union, regular position.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Agency Leadership:  Actively participates in the senior leadership team of the agency; partners with fellow agency directors on identifying and solving agency-wide issues and opportunities, making connections among seemingly unrelated issues; anticipates future consequences and impacts of decisions. As a member of CSB management, interact and collaborate with community care partners and as a stakeholder through participation in community meetings, committees, task forces, etc.

 

CSB Leadership:  The Director of Chicken Soup Brigade provides strategic direction, oversight of client care, quality assurance, legal compliance, and safety, as well as grant and growth guidance. The Director is responsible for operational leadership for the grocery, meals, and nutrition programs. The Director will manage or conduct local and national advocacy efforts to promote the program, advocate for governmental policy changes including the goals of the Food is Medicine Coalition, and other advocacy efforts that improve client care through healthy food and nutrition programs. . 

 

Staff Development and Supervision: Develops and mentors direct reports. Identifies, develops, and supports performance metrics that align with the agency and program strategies and goals. Works collaboratively with program management to direct and oversee development and implementation of program initiatives, policies and procedures that focus on employee engagement, meeting contract deliverables within budgets, process improvement initiatives, client satisfaction, quality, and workplace safety. Work closely with agency and program management teams to adjust processes to achieve targets. Conduct employee performance evaluations that encourage professional growth and develop of direct reports.

 

Meal Production and Distribution: Oversee all aspects of production ensuring that compliance with all applicable federal, state and local health standards are maintained at all times. Ensure the timely production and distribution of packaged meals to ensure adequate inventory of meal categories meet the delivery schedule. Working with the CSB management team, review and update delivery routes as necessary. Ensure supervision of all staff to safeguard the correct usage of all kitchen and warehouse equipment, proper compliance with all safety standards, quality and health standards are consistently met by all staff. Support volunteer recruitment, retention, and recognition.

 

Fiscal: In conjunction with the Deputy Director and Senior Program Manager develop annual program budget to include Kitchen Operations, Delivery, Warehouse, and Client Services budget, incorporating all related costs and expenses, to ensure proper financial performance and efficient use of resources, including labor, food and all related expenses. Manage the overall operational, budget, and financial responsibilities and activities of the program. Make business decisions that are financially responsible, accountable, justifiable, and defensible in accordance with organization policies and procedures. Utilize existing tools and develop new methods to manage program fiscal controls.

 

External Relationships: Interacts and collaborates in a professional manner with community care partners through actual participation in community meetings, committees, task forces, etc; negotiates skillfully in tough situations with both internal and external groups.

Educational Background: 
• Bachelors or Master’s degree in relevant field (e.g., Culinary Management, Social Work, Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, Health Administration, Business, etc.) or equivalent experience leading organizations.
Skills/Experience: 

 

  • Strong experience in design, implementation and evaluation of human services programs; knowledge of local nutritional, health care and social services community; with an understanding of Food is Medicine. .
  • Experience leading large, diverse teams; possess an understanding of professional boundaries; can work comfortably in a diverse workplace.
  • Experience leading a commercial kitchen staff and knowledge of kitchen operations, and nutritional requirements is preferred.
  • Proven ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects and deadlines in a time-sensitive environment; proven ability to work both independently and in a collaborative team environment; ability to respond quickly to change; ability to develop good working relationships with internal and external customers; demonstrated ability to work effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written form; comfortable with public speaking and public outreach; experience with group facilitation, conflict resolution and a working knowledge of organizational development issues.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and database skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and walk up one flight of stairs.
  • Able to occasionally work a flexible schedule that will include evenings and weekends.

Chicken Soup Brigade – The goal of CSB is to improve the nutritional health of individuals living with chronic conditions and hunger. We believe that Food is Medicine and that nutrition is vital to one’s overall health.

Housing – Managing health issues is easier with somewhere safe and stable to live. Our Housing program administers several different programs that are targeted to clients’ unique circumstances.

EHIP – The Evergreen Health Insurance Program pays insurance premiums for individuals living with HIV who otherwise might not be able to afford it on their own. In addition to paying insurance premiums for people living with HIV, we also support HIV negative individuals by paying the premiums for clients enrolled in the PrEP DAP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Drug Assistance Program). 

Dental – We believe that good oral health is essential if you are living with HIV and our Dental Program is there to ensure that individuals under a certain economic threshold can access these services.

LTSS – The primary goal of Long Term Support Services is to enable vulnerable adults to reside in the setting of their choice with services and supports that maximize independence, dignity, and quality of life. The program serves Medicaid eligible clients 18 years old and older living in East King County. 

Prevention and HEYO– Our Prevention team provides free HIV testing, PrEP information and navigation, sexual health education, free condoms and works with youth to fight stigma around LGBTQ+ identities and living with HIV.

Volunteers - Lifelong has a long and proud volunteer tradition. The organization was founded by volunteers and without the compassionate care demonstrated daily by our hundreds of volunteers, we would not be able to provide the same depth of services to our clients.

History – Lifelong was formed in January 2001 through the merger of Chicken Soup Brigade (CSB) and Northwest AIDS Foundation (NWAF). For many years both organizations operated parallel to each other in providing services to people living with HIV. In 2014, Lifelong merged with Evergreen Wellness Advocates. As HIV has evolved, so have the needs of people living with the disease, and in turn, our services.
