The purpose of the Facilities Assistant position is to provide support the Center Manager in all operational functions of the Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary (RDAC). These operational functions include performing maintenance work for the buildings, grounds, equipment and vehicles at the RDAC or to contract to have the work done when necessary; collaborating with the staff on facilities use and planning; collaboratively manage and improve the site for wildlife with Center Manager and volunteers; and coordinating with volunteers, whenever possible, for gardening, building and grounds upkeep, trails maintenance and other tasks. The Facilities Assistant will regularly interact with the public and with diverse populations of visitors from around the world.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Maintain buildings and grounds, including upkeep of lawns, gardens, walkways, parking lots, trails, and buildings. Maintain water/irrigation, plumbing, electrical systems.  Tasks may include light repairs, light construction, painting, light cleaning, equipment maintenance and repair, and other work as needed.  Maintenance of Center and State Office vehicles.  Purchase of maintenance supplies and equipment. Use of appropriate safety equipment is mandatory. 
  • Provide assistance for weekend or after-hours meetings, weddings and other events that use the facilities, and to visitors.
  • When necessary, arrange for outside contractors, including soliciting bids, completing contractor paperwork, supervising contractor work, approving and submitting invoices for payment, etc. 
  • Submit annual and periodic maintenance budget requests to Center Manager, including purchasing of new or additional equipment and supplies; working with the staff on the sustainable use and future planning for the Center’s facilities. 
  • Working with volunteers on upkeep and enhancement of the buildings and grounds.
  • Maintain relations with core contractors (cleaning, plumbing, electrical, builders, water, security).
  • Maintain contacts with essential city, county and federal (i.e.Forest Service) officials, and other partner NGO’s.
  • Use of hand tools, lawn mowers, water pumps, water systems, power equipment will be required.  
Educational Background: 
High School diploma or equivalent required; Associates or Bachelor's degree is preferred.  
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2 + years’ experience with building and facilities maintenance, preferably at a large facility.
  • Previous hospitality or guest service related experience a plus.  
  • Must be self-motivated, energetic, team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of basic maintenance, repair and safety issues essential, including plumbing, electrical, and construction.  Other craft skills highly desirable. 
  • Must have valid NM driver’s license. 
  • Interest in nature, historic preservation, education, working outdoors and working with volunteers desirable. 
  • Willingness to combine manual labor with administrative duties. 
  • Work experience in facility maintenance, landscape maintenance and hospitality industries helpful.
  • CPR certified and have basic first aid skills and training desirable.
  • Should be physically fit and able to do heavy lifting, operate various tools, machinery and other equipment, walk trails and grounds.
