The GreenStart Intern will assist in the daily operations of the Randall Davey Audubon Center and the conservation activities of Audubon New Mexico; including the delivery of school and community education programs, habitat restoration projects, bird surveys and monitoring, projects to improve the facilities at RDAC, hydrological data management, grassroots organizing, and a variety of others.

This paid position is seasonal and hourly scheduled for 20-30 hours per week. The educator will be supervised directly by the Director of Community Education at the Randall Davey Audubon Center. Projected start date is September 9, 2019 and projected end date is December 6, 2019. Weekday, some evening, and some weekend work may be required.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead groups of elementary students outdoors and in-classrooms through innovative environmental education activities and curricula at the Randall Davey Audubon Center and Sanctuary (RDAC) and in Santa Fe schools
  • Work closely with staff members to plan and implement programs for adult and family outreach and education programs
  • Assist with field data collection and data entry
  • Participate in site visits to areas with important bird habitat throughout the state
  • Support digital organizing and advocacy efforts
  • Interact professionally and positively with students, teachers, parents, and visitors
  • Maintain and enhance existing activities/curricula, including the upkeep of program materials and resources
  • Assist as necessary with the maintenance of nature center buildings and grounds at RDAC
  • Interact with the public to provide information about Audubon and Audubon’s mission, answer specific questions for visitors associated with the Randall Davey Audubon Center and be a positive ambassador of Audubon
  • Promote Audubon’s conservation initiatives within the community
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required
Educational Background: 
Similar professional experience in the field of natural resources. Minimum of two years of college-level study may be substituted. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Valid NM driver’s license
  • Experience and background in environmental education, New Mexico natural history, and natural resources.
  • Experience working with elementary-level students (PreK-6th grade)
  • Skills teaching in formal and informal settings to a variety of audiences
  • Hard-working, flexible, and self-motivated
  • Ability to work individually and in a team setting
  • Professional and friendly manner
  • Experience directly working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Spanish fluency highly desirable
  • Must be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time, lift loads up to 25 lbs, and traverse uneven terrain for over 2 miles. Must be able to lead groups in an outdoor setting, including being able to traverse the trails and uneven terrain of the Nature Center and surrounding properties, preserves, and sanctuaries in variable weather conditions.
