The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an intern for its San Francisco office. Ideally, the intern should be available for a minimum of two full days or three partial days per week with occasional night events from mid-May through late August 2018. This internship is best suited for individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. The intern will gain knowledge of the organization's priority human rights issues and build skills in fundraising, event planning, and information tracking.
Internships are unpaid; however, students are often able to arrange academic credit, as Human Rights Watch internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the Human Rights Watch staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
The intern will learn and be exposed to:
- Cultivating donor relations;
- Drafting letters and other correspondence;
- Participating in advocacy efforts;
- Using the Raiser’s Edge database; and
- Organizing and executing outreach events and initiatives.
Other tasks may be assigned as the opportunity arises and matches the intern’s interests and abilities.
- Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in human rights. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, internet applications) are required.
- Experience with fundraising and event planning is desirable.
